Beneficiaries of the PM Vidyalaxmi programme for higher education now have the opportunity to submit their testimonials to the Ministry of Education. The Ministry, in a post on social media, invited beneficiaries to send a video of under one minute describing how the programme helped them to realise their aspirations for higher education. The Ministry has made a direct appeal to the beneficiaries of PM Vidyalaxmi to record their stories and describe how the programme helped them to fulfil their education goals. The Ministry made a creative choice to allow the submission of a short video as, in the absence of a lengthy testimonial, the initiative is easy for a large audience to participate in. What Is the PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme?
The PM Vidyalaxmi scheme is one of the central sector schemes initiated by the Government of India in November 2024. The scheme aims to provide financial assistance to talented students to support their higher studies. The PM Vidyalaxmi scheme provides students who make it to the merit list of the participating Quality Higher Education Institutions with education loans that are collateral-free and guarantor-free. Additionally, students whose families earn up to ₹8 lakh a year, can avail of a 3% interest subvention on the loans taken for education up to ₹10 lakh, under the scheme. The scheme strives to eliminate financial constraints that prevent students from getting access to quality higher education.
PM Vidyalaxmi Portal Makes Applications Digital
To apply for education loans and the interest subvention offered under this scheme, a dedicated PM Vidyalaxmi portal has been created. As per the Ministry of Education, the portal was made operational on February 25, 2025, and aims to offer a systematic and simplified application interface with the participating banks.
The digital initiative offers transparency in the education loan application process and intends to simplify the process for the applicants.
PM Vidyalaxmi Is Growing Fast
The government's latest statistics showcase the rapid growth of the announced scheme. From the introduction date of PM Vidyalaxmi, on 6 November 2024, until the date of 21 July 2026, 112,817 PM Vidyalaxmi education loans were approved, which were fully collateral-free and guarantor-free. The approved amount was ₹15,634.78 crore, based on the data provided by the Ministry of Education in the Lok Sabha.
For the years 2024-2025 to 2030-2031, the government has planned a budget of ₹3,600 crore. The scheme is planned to assist 7 lakh new students during the period.
Who is Eligible for PM Vidyalaxmi?
All students who gain admission on a merit basis to the selected Quality Higher Education Institutions are the beneficiaries of the scheme. The Ministry of Education has increased the number of institutions in the scheme. Based on an official notification published by the Ministry in August 2025, the number of participating Quality Higher Education Institutions increased from 860 to 902 with the addition of 42 new institutions.
