PM Modi Announces Free Online Coaching for Youth; AI Training for 1 Crore Young Indians
New Delhi: The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, announced a free nationwide network of online coaching to prepare youth for competitive examinations during a nationally televised Independence Day address from the Red Fort on August 15, 2026. He also discussed a plan to offer artificial intelligence (AI) skills to over 1 crore youth within the next year.
The proposed online coaching network aims to relieve financial burdens linked to private coaching, especially for families in the middle class and lower socioeconomic classes. Instead of presenting fully operational coaching networks and/or specific exams, the Prime Minister said the government will create a system using Digital Public Infrastructure, teachers, and available talent.
Free Online Coaching for Competitive Exams
The announcement tackles an operational cost that has long plagued India's competitive exam systems: coaching. PM Modi said coaching has become a financial burden for lower middle class families and that many parents feel they have no choice but to send children to coaching. The online network will provide quality coaching without charging the classic fees for private coaching.
The Modi government hasn't provided specifics of how the network will be implemented, such as a target date, covered exams, coaching registration, and eligibility. The details will likely matter the most to the targeted beneficiaries when they are released.
Government Will Build Digital Public Infrastructure to Create a National Coaching Network
The Prime Minister announced plans to build a network of national coaches by combining existing digital infrastructure and India's teachers and academics. This approach aims to level the ‘coaching disparity’ and erase the geographical advantage currently enjoyed by students studying in major coaching hubs. Students in small towns and rural areas will be able to study in the same digital learning environments without the need to move to major cities to prepare for the exam.
From the family perspective, it will simplify the financial equation because they will not have to pay the coaching fees. PM Modi said this initiative will help students stay near their family and prepare for the exams.
One Crore Youth to Get AI Skills Training
Another major youth-focused initiative was announced along with the free coaching initiative. The Prime Minister stated the government has decided to train one crore youth with AI skills in the next year. The Prime Minister's Office has stated that the goal is to enable youth with the skills and competencies to lead and dominate the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence.
While the goal of the AI coaching program is on future-oriented employability and technical skills, the free coaching program is focused on access to competitive exam preparation.
What Students Need To Know Right Now
First, let's explain what this announcement means. This is the government formally presenting their plans to the citizens. This is not the opening of the registration window and there is no such window currently. Students should not believe any offers of early registration to the government coaching program.
The government is still considering the framework, the participating exams, and the launch. Students will be required to check the eligibility and check the course structure, teaching and study plans, and the required authentication upon release of the operational guidelines.
Could Free Coaching Change India's Exam Preparation Landscape?
The answer to this question will depend a lot more on the implementation than on the announcement. Providing online coaching for free will not automatically solve the coaching problem. Accessibility is important, but not quality.
The final choice of teaching faculty, study materials, practice tests and the resolution of students' doubts, along with support for students' access to the internet and the consistency of the classes will determine whether students benefit from the program. In that context, this next phase of the plan is more important than the announcement.
A Bigger Youth-Centered Initiative
The Prime Minister’s announcement of free AI and coaching, along with a range of other youth-centred initiatives, included a nationwide sports talent hunt, technology, semiconductor manufacturing, civil defence and nuclear energy during his Independence Day address.
While initiatives focused on sport, defence and civil nuclear energy may have the longest-term impact, for young people, announcements related to education and skills are likely to be of most relevance in the near term.
PM Modi’s initiative of providing free online coaching for competitive exams is likely to reshape the delivery of government-funded coaching in exam prep. The plan may create a network of digital public infrastructure, teachers, and academic professionals, and would provide free coaching to students in financial need. The government's announcement to provide training in AI to 1 crore youth in 1 year, shows a commitment to future-centred training. Whether these goals are achieved will depend on when the government finally reveals its plans and by which measures the government coaching will be evaluated.
