  • PM eVidya: Integration of 200 DTH Channels, Mobile App, & Radio with the Objective of Making Teaching and Learning Accessible beyond Classrooms

New Delhi: Ministry of Education, Government of India has launched a scheme with the objective of making educational resources accessible through multi modes. This includes provision of 200 DTH Channels, a mobile application and Radio resources. The scheme believes that students should be provided access to educative resources through various modes, rather than depending on conventional classroom teaching or digital means.

The scheme is based on the NCERT curriculum and helps students to study beyond school hours.

What is PM eVidya?

The Ministry of Education, Government of India, launched PM eVidya, a digital and broadcast education service, to make teaching and learning at the school level accessible through ICT. The scheme brings together Educational Television, Digital Education, Mobile Education and Community Radio.

As per Central Institute of Educational Technology, NCERT, PM eVidya employs several means to distribute Educational Resources in the form of Audio, Video, Text, etc. The focus is to make Educational Resources easily available to learners through different means based on their location, accessibility and the gadgets at their disposal.

200 DTH Channels: Taking Educational Content to Television Screens

The PM eVidya project has allocated 200 DTH educational television channels to different states, Union Territories, and central educational institutions. Content of these channels is the educational programmes of the NCERT, CBSE, KVS, NIOS and NVS, etc. The project embodies the ‘One Class- One Channel’ principle, under which, 12 NCERT DTH channels are dedicated for content based on the NCERT curriculum for Classes 1 to 12.

Television's-classroom approach delivers lessons to the students via the education programs and provides students another alternative way to learn outside their homes as opposed to relying on the Internet and online learning. The complete channel allocation and related information can be found on the NCERT- CIET DTH channel directory.

PM eVidya Mobile App: Multiple Learning Resources in One Place

The PM eVidya mobile application integrates several learning resources for students, teachers and teacher educators, and also parents within the same digital platform.

The application has been developed jointly by NCERT and BISAG-N. Some of the integrated learning resources in the application include:

  • DIKSHA
  • SWAYAM
  • SWAYAM Prabha
  • SATHEE
  • 200 PM eVidya DTH Television channels
  • Community Radio and i-Radio
  • Educational podcasts
  • Resources for Children with Special needs

The application provides easy and convenient access to the integrated learning resources for users.

Radio Learning: An Alternative Option in Audio Based Education

Not everyone has regular access to a TV or a stable internet connection. For people who cannot access TV based learning, Radio based learning is one of the viable options. PM eVidya offers a range of audio based learning resources through community radio, i-Radio and podcasts. These can also help learners who prefer or require audio based learning materials or who have restricted access to video based learning.

Where digital connectivity is an issue, radio provides an additional mode of communication for educational purposes. The initiative uses a combination of audio resources, television and the mobile phone, to extend access to learning.

How PM eVidya Supports Different Types of Learners

The strength of a multi-platform learning initiative is to offer learners different means to access learning materials. PM eVidya brings together a number of learning means, rather than depending on a single means of learning.

PM eVidya and Other Digital Education Initiatives

PM eVidya takes a diverse approach to digital learning, integrating television, mobile and audio-based technology. The 200-channel PM eVidya network complements the app and radio component to offer a range of access points for learners. The initiative also connects users to other online learning resources such as DIKSHA, SWAYAM and SATHEE.

While these resources provide additional learning opportunities, they will not, on their own, replace a teacher or academic mentoring. As such, educators should make use of these resources to augment their existing teaching and learning resources. Families interested in supplementing their children’s learning with curriculum-related materials and alternative ways of studying may wish to visit the PM eVidya App and the Official NCERT Channel directory to begin.
