Kolkata: St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata has officially announced its Ph.D. Admissions for the academic session 2025–26, inviting applications from eligible candidates for research positions across several specialized domains. The announcement was made by the Ph.D. Cell of the college under the coordination of Dr. Samrat Roy, and carries the approval of the Principal of St. Xavier’s College.

According to the official brochure, admission is open to candidates under three distinct categories:

  • JRF Qualified Category (Category 1): Candidates possessing CSIR/UGC NET, DBT/ICMR JRF, or equivalent fellowships.
  • NET/SET Qualified Category (Category 2): Candidates eligible for Assistant Professorship but without JRF.
  • NET Score–Based Category (Category 3): Candidates applying solely on the basis of their NET score.

The college has clarified that no Research Entrance Test (RET) will be conducted for the current admission cycle. Selection under the JRF-qualified category will be based entirely on a viva-voce (oral interview), with 100% weightage given to the candidate’s performance during the interview.

Vacancies and Research Areas

The Department of Biotechnology has announced multiple Ph.D. openings in diverse and high-impact research domains, including:

  • Computational Biology, Genomics, Natural Product-Based Drug Discovery, and Gut Microbiome–Metabolome Axis (2 vacancies for candidates with own fellowships)
  • Food, Environment, and Medical Microbiology (1 vacancy)
  • Genetic and Epigenetic Signalling in Development Pathway (1 project-supported vacancy)
  • Cancer Biology (1 vacancy)
  • Biochemistry and Computational Biology (2 project-supported vacancies)
  • Structural and Functional Studies of Pathogenic Bacteria (2 vacancies for JRF/NET-qualified candidates)

The Department of Microbiology is offering positions in:

  • Environment and Agricultural Microbiology (2 vacancies under the DBT Builder Project)
  • Isolation of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria from Environmental Isolates (1 vacancy)

  • The brochure places significant emphasis on the Statement of Purpose (SOP), which is mandatory for all applicants.
