New Delhi: The growing disconnection between the younger generation and book s was the focal point of the Reading Torch Seminar held today at the India Habitat Center. Aimed at rekindling the habit of reading and learning among children, the seminar brought together prominent education leaders and experts who voiced their concerns about the diminishing emphasis on books in today's digital age.
Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Central School Education Department, served as the chief guest, emphasizing the critical role that reading plays in shaping a bright future for children. He urged educators to foster curiosity and a love for reading in young minds, stressing that these habits form the foundation for lifelong learning.
CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta highlighted the importance of early childhood as a pivotal period for instilling a reading culture. He noted that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has already begun addressing this by lowering the age of school admission, thereby creating a more conducive environment for early learning.
Yuvraj Malik, Director of the National Book Trust, described reading as an essential art that needs to be cultivated in children. He likened it to an investment in their future, underscoring the long-term benefits of developing a reading habit.
The seminar also featured insights from CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj and motivational speaker Deepak Vohra, along with educationists and school principals from across the country. Conveners Rajesh Bajaj and Manbir Bedi concluded the event by stressing the urgent need to raise awareness about the significance of reading and learning, calling for collective action to revive the culture of books in educational institutions.
