NTA seeks Subject Matter Experts for Question Setting and Translation.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) is inviting experts for evaluation and translation of various examination-related functions. Eligible candidates can submit their Expression of Interest (EOI) by October 9 on the NTA website.
NTA is seeking experts for various functions such as question and item writing, review and evaluation of items, moderation, translation or transadaptation. Experts now have an opportunity to review and evaluate the quality and standard of NTA examination-related questions.
What are the Functions SMEs will Perform?
The subject matter expert (SME) roles are more extensive than just writing examination-related questions.
According to the NTA, for the formation of examination-related questions, subject experts work with professionals of other domains such as Psychometrician and statisticians. NTA emphasizes that examination-related questions go through several stages, and each is reviewed several times for the assessment of quality and its simplicity and fairness toward all the candidates. The four areas for which experts are sought are:
- Writing of questions
- Review and evaluation of questions
- Moderation
- Translation/transadaptation
Experts involved in the writing of questions are expected to prepare questions which are in concordance with the syllabus and the aims of the test. They are required to review the clarity of items and their difficulty level. Translation reviewers will check if the items have been adapted to other regional languages and if they maintain the proven cultural and linguistic values of the original items.
Who is Eligible to Apply for NTA SME Empanelment?
These invitations are sent to those of you who have substantial expertise in your fields. Faculty members, professors, and other subject specialists who are currently working or have retired, and who have subject knowledge, are invited to apply as per the current notification. Experienced researchers and academicians also fall within the purview of the notifyable Subject Matter Experts.
Please note that this notification is not similar to the advertisements issued by the government for recruitment. Here, we are inviting applicants for enrollment as the Subject Matter Experts, whereas there, appointments will be made to the permanent posts of the NTA.
Importance of Question Review for NTA Exams
A question in an entrance or eligibility examination is not just about knowing a particular fact. The question can be analysed on multiple parameters, such as wording, answer choices, level of difficulty, and implied objective (learning outcome). According to the published framework, NTA develops the test under the guidance of subject experts and psychometricians, and subjects it to multiple reviews. The clarity of the question and the correctness of the answer are reviewed, as is the potential for unfairness and bias.
NTA says that item-writing committees review, rewrite, moderate and refine questions. After a test is assembled, other external experts may independently review the questions and compare their answers with the NTA answer key before the examination is published.
