NTA Exam System Set for Major Overhaul, Four-Tier Question Paper Checks to Be Introduced
New Delhi, August 19, 2026: The system of examinations and security sections of the National Testing Agency (NTA) will soon see major reforms. This is based on directives from Union Minister of Education Shri Pralhad Joshi. Based on these directives, the NTA is working on increasing the scrutiny of question papers, improving the examination team and increasing security related infrastructure of the agency.
During the follow-up meeting on NTA, the minister emphasized that all the security related infrastructure, including that for the conduct of examinations, must be put in place. These developments come at a time of high-stakes examinations for students and candidates across the country that the NTA has to conduct.
NTA Revamps Examination Team
According to the latest updates, the NTA is carrying out a major reassessment of its entire examination team. As part of this exercise, around 600 team members have been removed and new team members will be appointed in accordance with the new assessment.
The agency also plans to hire around 20-25 new members in the next 2-3 weeks. The new induction plan has been reviewed. With these changes, the agency wants to ensure that it has the expertise as well as the manpower to carry out the examinations on a large scale, across the country. Recent reports also confirm that the NTA is strengthening its question paper scrutiny system and appointing new team members as part of its examination-related reforms.
Four Tier Question Paper Checking System
The four-tier system of checking question papers is a new proposed approach to checking exam papers. The improved system will check papers through multiple stages before usage in a final exam to eliminate errors that slip through the checking process.)
This new system will introduce changes in the process of preparing question papers and checking them. The news outlets that published the NTA’s planned changes indicated that the four tier scrutiny system is one of the systems the agency will use to restore trust to the examination system. Improving the checking process of question papers by checking them more times will have a positive effect on the quality and reliability of the question papers used in the competitive examinations that are of most concern to the students.
NTA premises to move to New Locations
The security of the NTA premises will also be addressed. According to the new job orders, the NTA will unroll its security upgrades by quickly relocating to new premises. The CISF will be responsible for the security at the new NTA premises. The security upgrades will protect NTA’s examination infrastructure and processes that deal with examination information.
Focus on Smooth Conduct of Examinations
The focus on security and infrastructure placed on the preparation of examinations by the Union Education Minister indicates the necessity of prioritizing security and infrastructure during the preparation of examinations for the upcoming academic session. The NTA conducts several national-level examinations based on which millions of students get admission, become eligible, and progress to the next level of education. These examinations include JEE Main, NEET UG, CUET UG, UGC NET and CSIR NET, etc.
When so many candidates sit for such examinations, operational preparedness, safety of question papers and examination infrastructure of the agency assumes significance. From these measures, it appears that the agency is serious about internal system strength as compared to a limitation of reforms to a cycle of individual examinations.
What the Changes Mean for Candidates
From the perspective of candidates of such examinations, reforms are expected mostly in the systems of examination papers, their preparation and safety. What appears to have been added is the four-level verification system. Furthermore, the Verified operational readiness of NTA is expected to be enhanced by the recruitment of additional staff.
However, the system depends on how reforms are implemented over a number of cycles of examinations. These measures have been introduced. It may take some time before the full impact of these measures is felt as the NTA starts carrying out new examinations in the revised framework.
Final Thoughts
The recent changes made by the NTA will enhance the safety and fairness of the exams through better control over the security of the exams, the manpower, and the scrutiny of the question papers. About 600 experts are expected to leave the NTA, and the security of the new NTA premises is proposed to be handled by the CISF, while the NTA is expected to hire new staff and design a four-tier question paper verification system.
For the applicants, the objective will be to have more secure and trustworthy exams through the new systems.
