NTA Enables DigiLocker Access for Old NEET Scorecards: Know How Students Can Benefit
If you are a medical student, losing your NEET scorecard used to mean you would spend weeks stressed out while sending constant emails to different authorities about your scorecard, all while wondering what to do about your admission during verification. Fortunately, this iteration of the NEET exam scorecard may have just become a thing of the past. In what is a groundbreaking move towards greater digitization, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has stated to the Central Information Commission (CIC) that they are almost done working on a DigiLocker framework that would allow candidates to digitally access their previous years' NEET UG scorecards. This initiative is expected to provide candidates with authenticated scorecards digitally whenever they may need them, thus reducing the usage of previous downloads or physical copies.
This development occurred due to the RTI appeal of a NEET UG 2020 candidate who wanted to receive a certified copy of her scorecard and confirmation of her qualifying status for FMGE eligibility verification.
What Does This Update Mean?
Most government examinations leave candidates unaware of the importance of their scorecards, but that is not true of the NEET exam. Many students who complete their MBBS outside of India, sit for the FMGE exam, or are going through Document Verification or one of the many Counselling and Admission processes, may be required to present their NEET scorecards. Unfortunately, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has a retention policy where copies of older NEET scorecards are not retained, which makes obtaining a new copy impossible.
The NTA’s proposed DigiLocker integration is a long-awaited potential solution to this issue that would provide candidates with authenticated safe access to older scorecards.
What Prompted the Move?
An RTI applicant requested a certified copy of her NEET UG 2020 scorecard. This prompted the issue. NTA informed the CIC, during the ongoing cases, that they have a limited time frame for keeping examination records as per their record management policy. Therefore, they could not provide the document. The agency also informed the Commission that the development of a DigiLocker-based retrieval system is at an advanced stage.
If this gets completed, no one in the following years will ever have to worry about losing the NEET results permanently.
How Will DigiLocker Help Candidates?
DigiLocker is a secure digital document wallet that can help users gain online access to verified government documents. It was developed as a part of the Digital India program. Digital India aims to help citizens by providing several government services to them digitally. Several records have already been stored in DigiLocker. These records include academic records, driving licenses, vehicle registration certificates, and examination documents.
Once NEET’s previous year scorecards are incorporated, candidates can expect:
- Easy access to old NEET scorecards whenever needed
- Documents can be digitally verified for trust and can be used during the verification process
- No more reliance on PDFs that can be printed
- Easy access during admission and counseling
- Document management for FMGE and similar processes will be easier
The new system will help improve document access and reduce the number of duplicate scorecard requests.
NTA has further integrated DigiLocker
NTA has been tying major exams to DigiLocker in recent years. Digitally signed JEE Main 2026 scorecards were available through DigiLocker, and NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam scorecards were provided through DigiLocker to candidates who opted for the service during the registration process.
The proposed integration would provide the same service to candidates wishing to obtain scorecards from previous exam years.
What Can NEET Candidates Do?
Although the service is not yet available, candidates can do the following:
- Active DigiLocker account.
- Update mobile number and Aadhaar details.
- Keep downloaded scorecards until the service is available.
- Stay tuned for updates and announcements on the service from NTA.
Final Thoughts
The proposed DigiLocker integration is part of the NTA's improved digital management of examination records and personal digital documents. Although the service is under construction, it is expected to solve one of the major challenges for NEET candidates and for students wishing to register in FMGE. The secure access of validated scorecards will eliminate one of the most friction point transactions of scorecards. The date is not announced, but once it is available, it is expected to be one of the most significant improvements in the NEET digital system.
