NMC Flags Ragging, Harassment Allegations at MGM Indore; Action Taken Report Sought
Madhya Pradesh: A complaint regarding alleged ragging, harassment and working-condition related issues at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College, Indore, has been brought before the National Medical Commission (NMC) which oversees medical education and regulates the profession.
After the alleged suicide attempt by a first-year postgraduate medical student in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, her brother approached NMC seeking an independent and expedited inquiry into allegations of ragging and harassment by three second-year postgraduate students, as well as the authorities of the concerned department.
What Occurred at MGM Medical College Indore?
As per media reports, the first-year postgraduate student was admitted to the hospital after an alleged insulin injection overdose. Police registered her complaint, while the institution launched an internal probe into the incident. The complaint before NMC alleged that three second-year postgraduate students in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department had been bullying a junior colleague. Additionally, the complainant alleged mental harassment, intimidation, and imposition of non-academic duties and undue pressure regarding academics.
The complainant sought an inspection of communication records, complaints, duty rosters, attendance and handover registers, academic credentials and other relevant documents to ascertain the situation. It must be noted that these are allegations made by the complainant, which may or may not be substantiated by evidence.
MGM Indore Launches Internal Probe
While the NMC inquiry into alleged ragging and harassment is still underway, it must be noted that the issue is being probed by authorities at the college as well. As per reports in TOI, three committees have been formed by MGM Medical College to look into the matter, including recording statements from the Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, as well as senior doctors. The probe is reportedly set to conclude with a report that will guide the college’s future actions.
Additionally, as per TOI, the concerned student has been discharged from MY Hospital after her treatment there. Police have also taken her statement as part of the investigation. The long working hours of postgraduate medical students have also contributed to discord in the college. The student representatives alleged that residents in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department were being forced to work 16-17 hours every day, while the college’s authorities responded by citing the 1992 Residency Scheme guidelines.
The May 2026 report noted the directions issued by the administration to concerned departments to maintain a record of working hours of each resident. In addition, the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has recently been reviewing a petition regarding allegations of long working hours of postgraduate students at MGM Indore.
What is the NMC Being Asked to Do?
The complaint before NMC sought the regulator’s intervention to ascertain whether the alleged acts of ragging and mental harassment by senior postgraduate students amounted to a violation of medical education and anti-ragging regulations. The complainant also urged NMC to probe the alleged role of the authorities of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department and their response to earlier complaints.
The complainant has also sought the inspection of electronic correspondence, duty rosters, attendance and handover registers, academic credentials and other relevant documents. At this juncture, it must be reiterated that as of now, NMC’s reports do not indicate that the allegations levelled against MGM Indore have been substantiated. While the regulatory probe, internal college investigation and police inquiry are independent exercises, their combined conclusion will dictate whether any disciplinary action will be taken against the institution.
