NMC Adds 100 MBBS Seats to Andhra Medical Colleges, Here's What It Means for NEET 2026 Students

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved additional MBBS seat allocations for the 2026-27 academic year for the two Andhra Pradesh government medical colleges. Kadapa Government Medical College increases to 75 seats and ACSR Government Medical College in Nellore increases to an allotment of 25 seats. This increases the educational capacity of the Medical College and increases opportunities for NEET UG 2026.

NMC Massively Fires Up Enthusiastic NEET Aspirants by Adding 100 MBBS Seats in Andhra

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 100 MBBS seats in two of Andhra Pradesh’s government medical colleges and has provided some much-awaited good news to thousands of NEET UG aspirants in Andhra Pradesh. The decision to add more government medical seats will be effective from the 2026–27 academic session. This provides more opportunities for government medical seats during the NEET UG counselling process.

Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav announced the news about the NMC’s Letters of Permission for the increase of undergraduate medical seats in government medical colleges in Kadapa and Nellore. As per the increase, Kadapa Government Medical College’s total intake of MBBS seats has been increased from 175 to 250. ACSR Government Medical College, Nellore’s total intake of MBBS seats has been increased from 175 to 200.

Two Government Medical Colleges Get Seat Expansion

With the increase in MBBS Seats, it is expected that the candidates appearing for NEET UG 2026 will have more chances to pursue MBBS education at a government medical college in Andhra Pradesh.

The approved increase for the following government medical colleges is:

  • Government Medical College, Kadapa: 175 to 250 MBBS Seats
  • ACSR Government Medical College, Nellore: 175 to 200 MBBS Seats
  • Total Seats Approved: 100

The additional seats will be effective from the 2026–27 academic year, subject to the approval of the routine counselling process post the NEET UG.

Why the Decision for NEET 2026 Candidates is Important

The competition for government MBBS seats is high nationwide. Every new seat means more chances for candidates to gain access to affordable government-funded medical education.

For students from Andhra Pradesh, this development means:

  • More government MBBS seats.
  • More chances in state counselling.
  • More doctors for the state in the future.
  • More options for medical education.

100 seats are a small drop in the bucket, considering the number of NEET aspirants. But it can give more deserving candidates a better shot during counselling.

Part of a Broader Trend for Medical Education

The latest approval includes the Centre's plan for more medical education. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed Parliament that 43 medical colleges were built in the 2025-26 academic year, with an addition of 11,682 MBBS seats and 8,967 seats for postgraduate medical education.

The National Medical Commission continues to review the applications of medical colleges to uplift the standards of medical education under the Establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment and Rating Regulations, 2023, and grant permission to open new medical colleges or increase the number of undergraduate and postgraduate seats.

What Students Should Know

Those planning to participate in NEET UG 2026 counselling should note that the newly approved seats will be included in counselling for the 2026–27 academic session.

Students should:

  • Frequently check for new seat matrices from the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and Andhra Pradesh state counselling authorities.
  • Only select options based on official counselling notifications.
  • Ensure seat availability before the counselling session is announced.

Final Thoughts

NMC approving 100 additional MBBS seats of government medical colleges in Kadapa and Nellore is a way of improving and expanding medical education opportunities in Andhra Pradesh. Moreover, increasing the number of government medical seats in the state improves the medical education infrastructure. NEET UG 2026 candidates can view this news positively in advance of the upcoming admission season.
