NIPER Hyderabad and Ahmedabad introduce AI Pharmacy Courses

Incorporating AI, biotech, data science, and med-tech into their programs is part of the curriculum improvements being made by NIPER Ahmedabad and NIPER Hyderabad. With added programs, expanded Centers of Excellence, and improved industry partnerships, NIPER Ahmedabad and NIPER Hyderabad's new initiatives aim to prepare students for future careers in the pharma and health care industry.

NIPER Hyderabad, Ahmedabad Bet Big on AI and Industry-Ready Pharmacy Education

Big changes are happening in India’s pharmaceutical education. NIPER’s Hyderabad and Ahmedabad campuses are in the process of overhauling their programs and the new pharmacy education will heavily feature artificial intelligence, biotechnology, medical technologies, and data sciences.

This is all part of a larger change in the pharmaceutical industry. Digital technologies, precision medicine, and complex medical devices are changing the way research, manufacturing, and even healthcare are done. NIPER Director Shailendra Saraf states that the institutes want to produce graduates who are ready for new and adapting roles in pharmaceutical research, regulatory science, and digital health, and therefore are redesigning their curriculum.

AI, Biotechnology, and Data Science in Pharmacy Programs

There is an effort to close the gap between academic pharmacy education and what the industry demands.

At NIPER Hyderabad, more focus is being given to bulk drugs, regulatory affairs, MedTech innovation, and pharmacoinformatics, while NIPER Ahmedabad is providing more infrastructure for biotechnology. As part of the integration of AI and data science, digital healthcare and predictive technologies will be part of modern drug discovery frameworks and offered as part of teaching modules. This is part of the integration of these technologies into the business of drug discovery.

These institutes also frequently examine and revise their curriculum through Academic Planning and Development Committees and Senates with industry pharmaceutical representation. It has been stated that within three years, almost 30% of the curriculum will be changed, while major changes will be made within five years.

Massive Move for Centres of Excellence

In addition to their on-site learning, both institutes will use the Centres of Excellence (CoE) to build more research networks.

The CoE will specialize in continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing, discovery of biosimilars and the production of home-grown medical devices. Industry ties are already being made to help with prototype development, clinical trials, and technology transfer. Testing labs that are accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) will be developed as a means to improve the research infrastructure.

As a part of the government's Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma MedTech (PRIP) project, the CoE will expand the research initiatives in all the National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) establishments.

New MTech Programme Coming 2026-27

NIPER Hyderabad and Ahmedabad are broadening their academic horizons. Starting in the 2026-27 year, both institutes will be adding an MTech in Biopharmaceuticals in addition to existing specialized programs like the following:

  • MTech in Medical Devices
  • MS (Pharma) in Pharmacoinformatics
  • MS (Pharma) in Process Chemistry
  • MBA in Pharmaceutical Management

It has been stated that the MBA in Pharmaceutical Management at NIPER Hyderabad is still running despite the worries in 2024 that it would be discontinued. Admissions are still open based on the eligibility criteria through GPAT, GATE, TS ICET, and NIPER JEE.

Entrepreneurship culture is growing at NIPERs as well.

Even without much support, we see NIPERs’ entrepreneurship culture develop at notified speeds. The NIPER Ahmedabad Biopharma Incubation Center and NIPER Hyderabad’s Avishkaran BioNEST and Pharma Innovation Center have begun to support student entrepreneurs who want to develop solutions in the biotechnological, MedTech, and AI-based healthcare domains. Considering the interest in entrepreneurship, officials believe the students want to pursue careers in research, industry, and entrepreneurship.

The NIPERs still have Good Placement Stats

They revamped the curriculum, but the placements have not been impacted. According to officials, both NIPER Hyderabad and NIPER Ahmedabad achieve almost 100% placements every year, and graduates are recruited by the top Indian pharmaceutical companies, multinational companies, and research companies.

Why This Should Matter for Future Pharmacists

A shift in pharmacy education in India is beginning. The traditional form of pharmaceutical education will soon include integrated training in life sciences at the intersection of artificial intelligence, computational biology, medical devices, and regulatory technology. Updates to the curriculum will be advantageous to students interested in pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, and innovations in healthcare. The updates will incorporate advancements relevant to an increasingly driven technological sector.

India's pharmaceutical industry is shifting the focus of business from generic manufacturing to innovative drug discovery and sophisticated medical technologies, which would suggest that institutions such as NIPERs Hyderabad and Ahmedabad are beginning to adjust the provision of formal education to the demands of the future workforce.
