NIOS Bridge Course 2026: Shri Pralhad Joshi Launches 6-Month Programme for B.Ed Primary Teachers
The six month NIOS Bridge Course 2026 for In-service primary teachers with a B.Ed. degree was launched by Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi on 16th September 2026. This course includes the training of pedagogical practices relevant to primary level teaching and is developed under the guidance of National council for Teacher Education (NCTE), ministry of education and implemented by NIOS.
Why Has the NIOS Bridge Course Been Introduced?
The aim of this course is to fulfill the directives of the Honourable Supreme Court of India, in the case of Devesh Sharma vs UOI & Ors (2024) 8th April, which said that a teacher with a B.Ed. degree can not be appointed for teaching at the primary level unless he/she completes a one year bridge course or equivalent.
This course will be undertaken by teachers who are already appointed for primary level teaching and this course should not be perceived as a course for qualifying bridge for primary level teaching. NIOS clearly states that the primary aim of this course is to retain the employment of primary level teachers and this course will not give teachers the right to seek employment for primary level teaching in the future.
Who Can Apply for the NIOS Bridge Course 2026?
The NIOS Bridge Course portal states that the standard eligibility allows in-service primary teachers with a B.Ed. who were appointed between 28th June 2018 and 11th August 2023.
Teachers appointed outside this appointments window may also be eligible for the course through the Court Order Registration. Relaxations granted by the Court will be verified through the production of the court order and an affidavit, and written petition by the applicant. It should be noted that not all B.Ed. teachers are eligible for the course.
What Will the Course Cover?
The course covers the following aspects of primary school teaching.
- Child Psychology and Development
- Teaching and Pedagogy
- Assessment and Evaluation
- Curriculum Development
- Pedagogy of Language and Mathematics
- The Pedagogy of Other Subjects of the Primary School
- School Based Work Experience
The course is worth 500 marks, which includes school based work experience, an internship and a written exam.
The Course is Primarily About School Experience
This is not an online course to earn a certificate. After a candidate enrolls, gets assessed and cleared for school experience by NIOS, he/she is required to spend a minimum of 20 teaching days in a lower primary school and attend a maximum of 10 contact classes. The candidate must also attend 80% of the school experience days. NIOS also stipulates that the candidate must maintain a certain level of classroom attendance for the school experience component.
The school experience component covers a number of activities which include, lesson plan preparation and classroom teaching. Other activities include, portfolio development work, facilitating educational activities and games for children and writing a reflective journal.
Diversity and Child Centered Approach
The course equips teachers with skills needed to work with pupils from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. It also helps teachers work with children with special needs and children of mixed ability.
The course also provides understanding of appropriate pedagogy and assessment in the early years and first step to primary education, including various areas of learning like e.g. literacy, numeracy, etc., children need for holistic development.
What Will the Course Change for B.Ed. Primary Teachers?
Teachers employed in primary schools and enrolled in the bridge course will be able to retain their current job. NIOS mentions that the appointment of such teachers will be terminated if they do not complete the bridge course in time.
Although implementing the bridge course is a step in the right direction, the UGC and the Department of Education are yet to issue a formal notification that will bring about a more substantial change, and shift the primary teacher recruitment policy to one that requires a B.Ed. degree.
In the interim, teachers are advised to refer to the official website of the NIOS Bridge Course and/or the most recent court/government orders to determine their individual circumstances, including the deadline for course registration.
Final Thoughts
This course will cover various child-centered instructional strategies. The course aims to teach primary education teachers theoretical and practical strategies to aid them in effectively using various formats of instructional strategies in the classroom. Primary teachers will learn to recognize different learning styles of children, as well as strategies on how to effectively teach and relate to children.
