New Delhi :  Ashish Sood has officially taken charge as Delhi’s new Education Minister, along with key responsibilities in Higher Education, Training & Technical Education, Home, Power, and Urban Development. The senior BJP leader from Janakpuri was sworn in today alongside Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who announced the portfolio allocations after the first Cabinet meeting.

Ashish Sood, elected from Janakpuri Assembly Constituency, has been entrusted with significant responsibilities, including Home, Power, Urban Development, Education & Higher Education, and Training & Technical Education.

A Political Journey Rooted in Student Activism

Born on September 2, 1966, Ashish Sood has been an active political leader since his college days at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College (Delhi University), where he was associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). His leadership skills were recognized early, leading to his election as President of Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) in 1988-89.

Sood’s political career saw steady growth, from being a full-time ABVP worker to holding key positions in Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and later in BJP Delhi, where he served as General Secretary and Vice President. In 2012, he was elected as a councillor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and later became the Leader of the House in SDMC.

Key Contributions and Public Welfare Initiatives

As an administrator, Ashish Sood played a crucial role in urban infrastructure development, safety measures, and education reforms. He worked towards improving street lighting in Janakpuri, enhancing security for women and children, modernizing roads and primary schools, and initiating free medical facilities for senior citizens.

During his tenure as Chairperson of the Education Committee in SDMC (2014), he launched projects like NEEV and the Lenovo Tablet Yojana, ensuring better educational resources for underprivileged children. His efforts also attracted CSR funding from corporate houses for public school development.

With his new role as Delhi’s Education Minister, Ashish Sood is expected to bring significant changes in school and higher education policies, alongside overseeing crucial departments such as Home, Power, and Urban Development.
