What Today's NTA Announcement Is About
On June 12, 2026, the National Testing Agency announced that the NEET UG will undergo changes for the re-examination on June 21. There is a large focus on addressing the concerns of applicants in the largest medical entrance exam in India. The NTA is making these changes to increase the comfort of exam takers and decrease the time constraints in the NTA NEET UG.
One of the most significant changes is the extension of the exam time. The time window for the NEET UG 2026 will be from 2:00 pm to 5:15 pm, allowing for a total exam time of 195 minutes. Additionally, the time window for the entry and exam staff procedures will be included in the time allotted for the entry and exam procedures.
Some of the major changes announced by NTA on June 12, 2026, are given below.
- The exam time window will be from 2:00 pm to 5:15 pm, allowing for a total exam time of 195 minutes.
- Rough work pages will be increased from 2 to 4 per question booklet.
- 2 rough work pages will be at the beginning of the booklet, 2 at the end.
- The question paper will have a new layout which will be more accessible to all individuals, including left-handed individuals.
- There will be no changes to the syllabus, the marking scheme (which is +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect), or the total number of questions.
The NTA stated in its official notice: “NTA believes that even small improvements in examination design can have a positive impact on the experience of candidates during a high-stakes examination.” The Agency stated that these changes will make the exam process more comfortable.
Why is this important for 22.79 Lakh Students
Important context is needed when looking at the NEET UG re-exam 2026 announcement. NEET UG 2026 was previously scheduled for May 3, but the exam got officially cancelled on May 12 due to a paper leak. There were multiple editions of the same paper and a lot of discrepancies between the original paper and a paper that was circulated before the actual exam. The Central Bureau of Investigation took over and arrested multiple individuals involved in the leak. Over 22.79 lakh students were left in limbo until the new date for the exam was announced for June 21.
Given the context, the announcement made today was far less formal. Students who have been preparing for the exam, now have a little more of a buffer on the exam day.
What extra space for notes means for students:
- Physics and Chemistry exam questions often require long calculation
- Biology helps when students have a little extra space to draw
- It is easier to organize rough work and more likely to be kept neat and tidy with multiple pages
- The new arrangement for pages is likely to help students who are left handed as well
Adding more time helps students who experienced the delayed entry process that added 10-15 minutes to their exam time in the last NEET and made the allotted time of 195 minutes feel even shorter.

What Students Must Do Before June 21
With just over a week until the exam, today’s announcement should be considered the last operational update, and students should act accordingly. The new exam timings and instructions Update will be available on the new hall ticket that will be released on June 17 at neet.nta.nic.In, according to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
A critical reminder: the initial hall ticket issued on April 26 will no longer be valid. It should not be brought to the exam centre. A new hall ticket will be issued to all 22.79 lakh candidates.
Here are the things you need to do by June 21:
- Download the new Hall Ticket from neet.nta.nic.in as soon as it is available.
- Check that your name, roll number, exam centre, and photo are correct.
- Affix a passport-sized photo on the self-declaration form of the Hall Ticket.
- Bring the new Hall Ticket and a valid photo ID.
- Be aware of the new reporting time.
- Do not pay attention to the unofficial claims of exam papers being leaked or fake hall Tickets being posted on WhatsApp or Telegram.
If there is a problem with your Hall Ticket, contact NTA at 011-40759000 or email at neetug2026@nta.ac.in prior to the exam. The fee refund for the original exam will be available until June 22, 2026. The examination will be conducted in the traditional pen-and-paper OMR format. The Supreme Court rejected a petition earlier this month to change the exam to a computer-based test.
