What actually happened to NEET UG 2026, and why has it been cancelled?
This is what many medical students, educators, and parents have begun to ask, and for good reason. The NEET UG 2026 exam was announced to be cancelled by the National Testing Agency (NTA) just four days after it was conducted. The agency stated, “NTA decided to cancel NEET UG 2026 and conduct it again as a mark of trust for students and to recognize the trust on which the national examination rests.” Now, this is not a rumor or some social media speculation , this news has been confirmed.
The immediate aftermath of the NEET UG 2026 exam was filled with rampant speculation regarding a possible leak. Cases of NEET paper leak speculation case has shifted between agencies ever since it was made. The Rajasthan SOG, for example, was among the many agencies that vertically investigated the case of alleged malpractice.
The Rajasthan SOG, for example, was among the many agencies that vertically investigated the case of alleged malpractice. What the SOG found was a handwritten paper, titled “suggestive paper”, that contained 120 matching questions. 90 questions from NEET UG were from the Biology section and 30 questions were from the Chemistry section. This is not because of the sheer luck of the guess master. This is a clear failure of the system.
The trail extended beyond Rajasthan. Early investigations by the GRS in Rajasthan discovered that an MBBS student in Kerala was accused of distributing test prep materials which resembled the actual questions in the NEET test a few days before the exam which was held on May 3. This SOG began their investigation after receiving information that a set of questions circulated prior to the exam closely matched the original paper.
This is troubling, especially with the direction the chain appears to follow. Early evidence suggests that the leaked guess paper may have come from a printing press, meaning there may possibly be a breach of internal security in the exam. It is reported that over 45 people have been detained in Rajasthan regarding the case.
Investigators found the evidence compelling enough for the NTA to justify what they believed to be an inability to let the exam results be published. Based on the evidence that the NTA assessed together with the central agency inputs and investigative findings from law enforcement, in order to preserve the integrity of the system, the National Testing Agency along with the Government of India, cancelled the NEET UG 2026 exam that was scheduled for May 3, 2026.
For the 22 lakh students who took the exam, this announcement brings both relief and frustration. For the students, relief, because the merit list will be fair. For the students, frustration, because they have been preparing for months and are in limbo while the exam's date is yet to be announced.
The details about registration, candidacy, and exam centers for the May 2026 cycle will be retained and carried on to the repeated examination. There will be no extra registration or fees required. The students will not be losing any of the money that they have paid or their eligibility.
The date of the examination is still to be decided, but the NTA has said it will be posted on their website neet. nta.nic.in. Updated admit cards will be provided for the examination.
