The Night Before an Exam That Changed Everything
New Delhi: On May 2, 2026, the eve of India’s largest medical entrance exam, a WhatsApp message arrived. An MBBS student from Kerala sent 300 “guess paper” questions to his father in Sikar, Rajasthan. His father received a message saying, “These are going to be tomorrow’s questions; distribute them among the girls in your hostel.” The following day, these papers were distributed in a PG (paid guest) hostel in silence. The exam was conducted and completed. The gross violation was realised when someone checked how many questions had actually appeared on the real exam paper. It was reported that almost 120 out of the Biology and Chemistry questions matched the NEET UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate) 2026 exam, which was conducted on the 3rd of May 2026.
When the hostel owner approached the Udyog Nagar police station in Sikar, he was, it is reported, turned away with “don’t spread rumours.” He then took the issue directly to the NTA (National Test Agency), which handed it over to the Central Intelligence Bureau (CBI). This referred to the cancellation of the largest medical entrance exam in the country, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, and left over 2.2 million applicants in the dark.
How the Investigation Unfolded
After the first tip-off reached the concerned authorities, the Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG) sprang into action. Raids at coaching hubs in Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Nagaur, and Dehradun detained around 15 people in the first phase of the operation. According to the investigators, the guess paper, four days before the exam, was sent to a counsellor’s mobile by April 29. Because of this timeline, a last-minute breach was unlikely and was therefore viewed as a pre-planned and well-coordinated operation. The preliminary assessment indicated that the leak originated from the Jaipur printing press, where the exam question papers were printed, or from a member of the question paper setting committee. This was also under consideration.
The case moved rapidly. Rajasthan SOG arrested the alleged mastermind, Manish Yadav, in Jaipur. A second key accused, Sikar counsellor Rakesh Mandawariya, who disseminated the material, was arrested. In total, 9 people were arrested across 5 states as the Central Government formally transferred the case to the CBI. NTA Director General Abhishek Singh confirmed that the agency knew about the suspected leak on May 7, after a whistleblower reported WhatsApp messages containing questions verbatim to those in the actual test. After verifying, NTA took it up with the central agencies on May 8, and by May 12 the exam was officially cancelled.
What NTA Said and Its Implications
The National Testing Agency has not used the words 'paper leak' in its communications but has left the space open for interpretation. In a post on X, the NTA stated that, 'on the basis of inputs, which were subsequently examined in coordination with central agencies, and the results of investigations communicated to us by law enforcement agencies, the current examination process was left with no other option but to be withdrawn.' With the permission of the Government of India, the NTA withdrew the NEET UG 2026 exam held on May 3 and announced that new dates would be published later. The NTA's Director General, Mr. Abhishek Singh, advised the students to ensure that the NTA's re-examination would be conducted in a transparent and fair manner. He also assured them that the fee paid for the cancelled exam would be refunded, and students would not incur any additional payment for the conduct of the re-test.
Significantly, no new applications would be required. The NTA also stated that the earlier submitted applications and preferences for the examination centre would be carried forward. The re-exam is expected to be conducted in June 2026, although no date has been formally announced as on May 13. There was an immediate political backlash. Rahul Gandhi, the Opposition Leader, called it a 'crime on the youth's future', while Ashok Gehlot, the former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, accused the state government of covering up the breach for two weeks. The student body NSUI also staged protests outside NTA, demanding that Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan resign.
What Students Should Know Right Now
For the 22 lakh candidates who took the NEET UG 2026 exam on May 3, 2023, this is a particularly stressful, frustrating, and unfortunate time. Systematic cancellation of the exam is a result of the systemic failures of the National Testing Agency and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, not of candidates. Here is what you need to know to help you figure out your next steps. Your registration is still active and no additional payments are necessary. The re-exam date is to be announced on the official NTA website, which is neet.nta.nic.in. Currently, the NTA is processing refunds for the cancelled exam. The investigation is now being carried out by the CBI. It is assumed that NTA officials will be interrogated, and the full network that distributed the examination papers will be investigated. NEET has a controversial history. The 2024 edition was marred by paper leak incidents and grace mark allegations, which reached the Supreme Court. The 2026 edition saw a similar pattern emerge, and calls for comprehensive reform for the National Exams has gained momentum. Students need a system that reflects the rigor of their preparations. This trust is on the CBI now, the Courts, and ultimately, the reformers.
