NEET UG 2026 Cutoff Rises Sharply, General Category Qualifying Marks Jump to 213
The National Testing Agency set some numbers to months of apprehension. Along with the NEET UG 2026 results published on July 16, the agency published the category-wise cut-off marks. The general category qualifying mark rose to 213 from 144 (in 2025).
The numbers carry more weight this year for a cohort of candidates who went through an exam that was cancelled, the investigation of a leaked exam, and the subsequent exam that was held three weeks later.
What the New Cut-off Means
The general category cut-off for NEET UG 2026 is set at 715-213. This means that to be considered qualified, candidates needed to score somewhere between these numbers based on their NEET score percentile. The SC, ST, and OBC categories have a cut-off range of 212-177. Aryan Gupta and Panshul Bansal were the only two students who scored 715 out of a possible 720 and thus shared the first rank in India. 19 students secured the 700+ score range.
Approximately 11.21 lakh candidates qualified in this cycle. This number, once counseling starts, indicates the level of competition.
Why This Year Was Different
To understand the major changes to the cut-off this year, let's reflect on May 2026. Originally, NEET UG 2026 was to be held on May 3rd for over 2.27 million candidates. A few days after the exam, the Rajasthan police found a leaked exam containing 140 exam questions, and the CBI started an inquiry into what is now known as the 2026 NEET controversy. The NTA decided to cancel the exam on May 12 and announced a new date.
The new exam date, unofficially called Re-NEET 2026, was set for June 21st. It was held in the pen-and-paper format all over India and in other countries. The time gap of almost 7 weeks from the original date of the exam to the new date compressed the already tight admission schedule. This is a major reason why the results and the cutoffs were released simultaneously this time, instead of being released in a staggered manner.
Reading The Numbers Against Last Year
In 2025, the general category cut-off was 686-144, down from 720-162 in 2024. This year, the cutoff was set to 715-213, which was the highest in the previous years. The papers were set to be more challenging, and more scrutiny was to be applied due to the leak controversy. This was likely the reason that even though the range was the same, the scores at the lower end of the qualifying range increased.
This means that, to qualify for the counseling process this year, candidates were required to get at least 213 marks. In previous years, candidates were required to get at least 150-160 marks.
What Qualifying Actually Means For You
Just meeting cutoffs doesn’t mean a candidate has been guaranteed a seat. Qualifying means eligibility to register for NEET UG counselling which is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee for All India Quota as well as the respective state counselling for state quota seats. Admissions will depend on the rank, category, availability of the seats, and preferences submitted during counselling rounds. It is also important to note that qualifying will not guarantee a seat.
With a total of 1,18,190 MBBS seats and 27,868 BDS seats available, the scores needed to gain admission to Government colleges in the All India Quota, will require that the general category (who is vying for a Government college seat) will need to score more than 600.
What is the Expected Schedule
- Re-NEET 2026 - June 21st 2026
- Final answer key - Early July 2026
- Results and cutoffs - July 16, 2026
- MCC counselling registration - Expected to be available shortly after the results.
Since the counselling window this year is expected to be shorter than normal, and due to the delays in the academic calendar, aspirants are advised to keep their scorecards, category certificates, and required documents ready in advance.
What Should Aspirants Do Next?
Qualified candidates should register on the MCC portal as soon as registration opens. In addition, candidates are advised to realistically shortlist colleges they intend to apply to, using their category rank rather than their overall AIR. Those candidates who met the state quota cutoffs but did not meet the state qualifying cutoffs are urged to look at private medical and dental colleges, deemed universities, BDS courses, and allied health courses, as the cutoffs will be lower. Given this year’s cycle of events, it is important not to rely on anything else.
Final Thoughts
NEET UG 2026 has been a unique admission cycle due to the surge in cutoff marks, something that has been building since the May exam was cancelled, the delayed re-test, and the shortened time frames. The general category qualifying mark at 213 does not determine who gains admission to medical college. However, it does reset expectations for the hundreds of thousands of contenders participating in counselling. The new best strategy is patience and preparation. This means to watch for official updates from the MCC, have all documents on hand, and assume the qualifying cutoff is a starting mark, not a finishing one.
