The National Testing Agency cancelled the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG 2026 on May 12, 2026, only nine days after 22.79 lakh students took the exam. The news was disappointing for students, parents, and educators alike. “Shock,” said one student surveyed outside of a coaching centre in Mukherjee Nagar, “followed by a quiet rage.” NEET was run in a single afternoon shift, from 2 PM to 5 PM, in exam centres across the country and outside it. Everything seemed par for the course until reports of suspicious behaviour began to spread.
Less than a day after the exam, the Rajasthan Special Operations Group received a tip about an online 410-question guess paper, 140 of which allegedly matched the NEET UG 2026 exam questions. The NTA referred the matter to central authorities on May 8. NEET’s official social media posts and websites confirmed what many expected, and the test was cancelled on May 12, 2026. The exam system is designed to test the applicant’s knowledge of the curriculum they have been taught. The cancellation of NEET is not simply a bureaucratic issue. It has the potential to disrupt an entire generation of youth hoping to enter the medical field.
So what exactly happened? The trail leads back to a network that allegedly circulated guess papers carrying a suspicious overlap with the real question paper. The Rajasthan SOG was the first to move on the matter, and investigators soon traced the source to individuals who had reportedly purchased a 120-question guess paper from a contact in Haryana.
"Dinesh Biwal and his brother Mangilal Biwal were tracked to Jamwa Ramgarh town in Jaipur district," a senior SOG officer confirmed to reporters. According to investigators, the two brothers purchased this guess paper for Rs 15 lakh and then sold copies to students in Sikar. What made the case politically explosive was that Dinesh Biwal was reportedly a local functionary of the BJP's youth wing, a detail that drew sharp reactions from opposition leaders, including former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. The Central Bureau of Investigation took over the probe and sent a team to NTA's Delhi office as well. Accused Dhananjay Lokhande was separately arrested in Maharashtra after reportedly fleeing from Pune. The arrests and the investigation are ongoing.
The Government of India referred the entire matter to the CBI for a comprehensive inquiry. This is the first time in NEET's seven-year history under NTA that the exam has been cancelled at this full scale, affecting every single candidate. In 2024, a re-test was limited to just 1,563 grace-mark recipients.
The most necessary question most students have is: what lies ahead?
In its official statement, the NTA said students will not need to re-register as all candidates for the May 2026 examination will have their applications carried forward. This means the choices for exam cities and centres will be carried over as well, and the application fee will be carried forward; the NTA will issue a refund. Candidates will not be required to pay an exam fee. New admission cards will be printed and distributed before the examination. The NTA will release a new timetable and new admission cards on the website neet.nta.nic.in. NTA has not given a date for when the exam will be held again, but educational analysts and coaching centres believe the exam will be rescheduled for June-July 2026.
In terms of a time frame, one educational policy analyst said, “printing new exam questions and securing 22 lakh candidates is not possible to do in a week.” Therefore, students should plan their study schedules to use the extra time to prepare because the exam and syllabus will not change, and the issue needs to be rectified as soon as possible. The Supreme Court has received a petition to shut down the NTA and form a new independent committee to handle NEET exams from the Federation of All India Medical Association. Various student bodies, such as the ABVP, have also demanded a fair and swift investigation. The political arena is experiencing the same growing pressure.
For students studying NEET from home, educators recommend ignoring social media and instead checking the official NTA website for updates. It’s suggested that students take mock exams, time themselves, and revise their weak sections of the NEET syllabus. NEET educators have said that “The best preparation for the exam is the time spent revising.” The official NTA website will be the source of all updates; exams will be rescheduled, and sorted refund queries will be documented at neet.nta.nic.in.
