NEET UG 2025 Admissions in UP Rocked by Fake Freedom Fighter Certificates

The state reserves 88 of its 4,442 MBBS seats (2%) for dependents of freedom fighters

Lucknow: The NEET UG 2025 admission process in Uttar Pradesh has been hit by a major scandal after authorities uncovered 64 fake certificates submitted under the freedom fighter quota, leading to the cancellation of MBBS seats across several medical colleges.

The Probe

The state reserves 88 of its 4,442 MBBS seats (2%) for dependents of freedom fighters. This year, 79 seats were allotted and 71 students took admission under the quota. The scam surfaced when a case from Firozabad revealed a forged certificate, prompting an inquiry led by the Agra district magistrate.

Subsequent verification by district magistrates in 10 districts exposed widespread fraud, with 64 out of the 71 certificates turning out to be fake.

District-Wise Breakup of Fake Certificates

  • Meerut: 15
  • Saharanpur & Ballia: 12 each
  • Bhadohi & Ghazipur: 9 each
  • Varanasi: 3
  • Ghaziabad: 2
  • Agra & Bulandshahr: 1 each

Action Taken

The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has cancelled all admissions secured through fake certificates. Director-General of Medical Education Kinjal Singh has directed that FIRs be filed against the students involved. The probe has also been extended to cover NEET UG 2024 admissions, raising fears that the racket has been active for years.

Larger Implications

The scam has denied genuine candidates their rightful MBBS seats, disrupted counselling rounds, and raised fresh concerns about the credibility of medical admissions in India. Experts warn that such incidents not only damage the reputation of Indian medical education but also erode public trust in reservation policies, which were designed to ensure equity.

With thousands of Indian students already pursuing MBBS in countries like the US, UK, Russia, and Ukraine, the exposure of fraudulent practices in India further undermines international confidence in the country’s admission system.

The Bigger Picture

What began with one suspicious case in Firozabad has now revealed a statewide fraud. The episode highlights systemic loopholes in the verification of reservation claims and calls for stricter oversight to protect both the fairness of competitive exams and the credibility of India’s medical education.
