NEET PG 2026: Exam Date, Eligibility, Pattern, Registration and What Every Aspirant Must Know

NBEMS has officially confirmed NEET PG 2026 for August 30, 2026. From eligibility and exam pattern to application dates and counselling, here is everything postgraduate medical aspirants across India need to know before the registration window opens.

The Official Announcement

There is a confirmed date concerning India's postgraduate medical entrance exam. The date was confirmed in a notice issued on January 22, 2026, by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). The exam is set for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET PG) courses to be held on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

It will be a computer based examination in a single shift across the exam centres in the country. The exam is being announced much earlier, in comparison to the previous version of the exam. For example, in 2025, a last minute change by the Supreme Court for the exam to be held in a single shift changed the exam time almost a week before the exam. Thousands of candidates were forced to change their exam preparation.

The NBEMS also confirmed the cut off date for the completion of the internship. In order for a candidate to be eligible for the exam and the counselling, they must complete their compulsory, rotatory, internship before or on the date of September 30, 2026. Candidates sitting for the exam and qualifying, but missing this cut off will be ineligible to be considered for the seat to which they qualify, and so this will be the only way to ensure they qualify.

Notice of the exam date, and the fact that they will be able to sit for the exam, will be useful for candidates. It will be helpful in planning a structured study and will help with exam preparation due to the fact that the registration window does not open for a long time.

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates are expected to ensure that all the conditions of eligibility for NBEBM are duly met before completing a form. These conditions are guided by rules with no exceptions of counsel related ineligibility to a process disqualification. Eligibility will lead to disqualification at all stages, including the Counsel stage. Eligibility to sit in NEET PG 2026 also requires that a candidate have an MBBS degree or a provisional pass certificate. This must be in an institution that is recognised by the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956. This must be matched in a register with the Medical Council of India, its successor, the National Medical Commission, or the appropriate State Medical Council. Evidence of this, either permanent or provisional, must be provided with at the application and at the counsel.

Mandatory completion of the one-year compulsory rotatory internship is inescapable. This is set by NBEMS at 30th September 2026. Interns are also qualified to apply, but will be expected to prove completion before the counsel. NBEMS has neither age nor attempt restrictions. Candidates qualified in Foreign Medical must also meet FMGE requirements. Candidates from Jammu and Kashmir have additional restrictions for the All India Quota seats, which are specified in the Information Bulletin.

Exam Pattern and Syllabus
The NEET PG 2026 exam will have a total of 800 possible points and will last 3 hours and 30 minutes. The exam will have 200 points where 1 point will be deducted for an incorrect response and an unattempted question will have no points deducted. Each correct response will gain 4 points.

The range of subjects for MBBS is used for the question paper. There is no set syllabus from NBEMS for the subjects, but it is generally known that pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical subjects are the main components of it. This would include the core subjects of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Preventive and Social Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, and all of the other sub-fields.

These subjects all focus on the clinical portion. Using standard reference texts and practicing MCQs from the previous year will help a lot. Admitting to the exam centers all across India is managed by NBEMS. The first week of August 2026 will be when the city intimation slip is given and the third week of August this year will be when the exam admit card will be given. On the day of the exam, candidates should bring a government-issued ID and their exam admit card.
