NDTF Urges DU to Follow UGC 2018 Rules in Faculty Promotions

The National Democratic Teachers Front (NDTF) has called upon Delhi University to follow the UGC Regulations 2018 in the way they were meant to be understood, as they are causing indefinite delays in promoting/recruiting faculty. NDTF President Prof. A.K. Bhagi has expressed concern that the preference for foreign indexed journals over the research published in journals of established Indian Universities and Government research institutions would harm the prospects of deserving teachers and erode the university's promotion system.

NDTF Pushes for the UGC Regulations 2018 to be Adopted by Delhi University as Intended

New Delhi: In an open letter to the Chairperson and members of the Executive Council (EC) and Academic Council (AC) at Delhi University, Dr. A.K. Bhagi, President of the National Democratic Teachers Front (NDTF), called for the UGC Regulations 2018 to be adopted as intended. He has also expressed his worries regarding the delays and hindrances to faculty appointments and promotions.

The NDTF has claimed that the preference for private commercial indexing systems over research published in journals of established and government-sponsored research university systems has negatively affected faculty members. The NDTF claims that this has further eroded the promotion system, which has been largely teacher-friendly following decades of struggle. The NDTF alleges that this has caused a great number of Not Found Suitable (NFS) cases in numerous departments at Delhi University

The NDTF has said that the UGC Regulations 2018 honored the teaching profession and dignified promotions, and thousands of promotions were made possible at Delhi University. The NDTF has said that the last six decades of teacher movements and struggles have made promotions at Delhi University more open and less difficult to achieve.

The NDTF said that constricted views on regulations, along with procedural obstacles, are causing delays that may damage academic stability and social justice. The organization called on the university's statutory bodies to apply the UGC Regulations 2018 in both the “letter and spirit” as well as ensure that promotions and appointments are dealt with in a transparent, just, accessible, and teacher-friendly manner.

As per the NDTF, maintaining teachers' dignity and safeguarding academic standards and excellence demand the existence of a just and regular promotion system.
