NCERT Holds Research Orientation for Amity University Education Students in New Delhi

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi held an academic orientation workshop for Amity Institute of Education, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, at the Library and Documentation Division (LDD). This workshop was aimed at helping potential educators learn how to use library resources and various research tools and platforms for educational research. The LDD's focus is on helping students negotiate the transition from learning how to use library resources to structuring research.

The NCERT Introduces Students to Key Research Resources

At the workshop, students were given an overview of the resources and services offered by the LDD, NCERT. The resources covered in this presentation included WEB OPAC, Institutional Repository, NCERT e Library, subscribed databases, ONOS and OJS. These resources assist students in locating published research and accessing research and scholarly materials in education and teacher education.

NCERT's LDD is a vital resource for researchers, educators, and policymakers. The LDD offers both print and digital resources for researchers. NCERT's Institutional Repository preserves and disseminates digital versions of scholarly resources. The annual report of NCERT states that this Institutional Repository was developed to allow online access to retired textbooks and other institutional materials.

The library Tour wasn’t the only thing

my students learned about on their first day. They were shown tips on how to review literature. They were also taught about open access research tools and reference management software.

Given that postgraduates are always doing dissertations, research papers, etc., these other tips can be very useful. Learning how to find good literature and research, and how to properly reference, can be very important for understanding the topics they are studying and how to present good research.

Being exposed to research tools can be very useful to postgraduates in the M.Ed. or M.A. Education and can help provide a foundation for them for Educational inquiry and Evidence-based writing.

Academic Interaction with NCERT Officials

There was also an engagement with Prof. P.C. Agarwal, Joint Director, NCERT, which was conducted by Dr Akash, Head and Librarian, LDD, NCERT. This enabled students to get first-hand interaction with an academic person and learn about the world of education and research and about the profession of research and of allied activities.

This was conducted by Dr Pooja Jain, Deputy Librarian, LDD-NCERT. This can help postgraduate students learn how to relate professional academic resources and research with their profession as an educator and a researcher.

Building Research-Ready Future Educators

The orientation is broader and comprises of academic libraries and their role in the higher education and research system. Students cannot merely access scholarly databases and digital archives. They must learn to effectively navigate, evaluate, and manage academic resources.

The focus of NCERT’s LDD has been on providing reference services, document delivery, resource sharing, and specialised information services for academics, researchers, and students. For the students from Amity Institute of Education, this session helped introduce them to the library and brought library resources and services to assist their academic research. This initiative also helps create the research-ready teacher. Teachers need research skills for reflective practice, for evidence-based practice, and for continued learning.

Final Thoughts

The NCERT orientation to the students of M.Ed. and M.A. Education provided a brief overview of library collections, digital sources of research, and support services. The orientation combined access to research facilities along with the literature review, open access tools, and reference management services. The objective was to enhance the research capabilities of future educators.

Meeting with the officials from NCERT helped the students understand ongoing development and research work in education, and how academic research is the cornerstone of teacher education.
