NCERT Digital Teacher Training 2026: Online Programme Focused on AI and NEP 2020
The Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET), NCERT, under the Ministry of Education, is focusing on the ever-evolving question in classrooms; what is a digital teacher? The online training programme, “Digital Teacher: Evolving Competencies, Professional Identity and Practices”, focuses on technology-driven changes in professional development of teachers and the changing role of teachers.
The programme is aligned with the NEP 2020, which calls for the continuous professional development of teachers and the use of technology in teaching and learning, in a meaningful way.
What is the Digital Teacher Training Programme?
CIET-NCERT considers the programme an attempt to bolster teachers’ awareness of contemporary digital competencies and their core professional activities. Training will involve far more than teaching digital tools to teachers. The Training covers:
- Digital content creation and curation
- Collaboration and communication
- Digital assessment
- Data-informed decisions
- AI and other technologies
- Ethics in and responsible use of technology
- Teaching that is learner-centred and inclusive
- Lifelong learning and the art of reflective practice

Technology is changing teachers’ professional roles, according to CIET-NCERT, and requires educators to be facilitators and mentors, designers of learning experiences, reflective practitioners, and learners for life.
Day 1 Focus: Teacher in the Context of NEP 2020
The first-day session, Teacher in the Context of NEP 2020, will be led by Professor Sharad Sinha, Professor and Head at the DTE, NIE NCERT at the University of Delhi. This session will examine what the NEP 2020 reforms entail and how they impact teachers and their role in the evolving educational landscape.
According to the official course framework, NEP 2020 places teachers at the heart of the learning process and encourages the learning of new pedagogies, innovative practices, and growth in their professionalism through various opportunities that integrate technology and other teaching platforms.
AI and Emerging Technologies
A feature of the training that is quite contemporary is its focus on AI and other emerging technologies. A session titled Teaching in the Age of AI and Evolving Teacher Competences is offered. The new emphasis in teacher training demands that educators understand how and when to sustain and increase the impact of technology enhancements and other teaching aids, rather than how to simply digitise teaching methods.
The official course learning outcomes would like training participant to analyze the impact of AI, and other new emerging technologies on teaching, and identify teacher competencies for integration of AI technologies in the teaching and learning process. Technology will not interpret educational content for teaching and teaching will decide whether the content created by AI is appropriate, accurate, inclusive, and useful to specific learner groups.
Teachers as Creators, Not Just Users
This talk is about "Teachers as Prosumers in the Digital Learning Environment." The term "prosumer" refers to a producer and consumer, thus an educator who actively engages in the production, curation, alteration and distribution of digital learning materials.
This shift in digital pedagogy encourages a more active role of the educator in a digital learning framework rather than a passive role of a consumer and lack of participation in production and collaboration.
Continuous Professional Development Using Technology
The last session revolves around the idea of continuous professional development enabled by technology, and believes that teacher learning does not end after the training.
The broader CIET-NCERT training position states that the NEP 2020 supports continuous professional development and the provision of opportunities for teachers to use technology to update their knowledge and practices.
The programme is also linked to a certificate pathway through DIKSHA. To receive the certificate, the participants are required to complete the digital resources, activities, the final assessment and feedback. The official course page states that to receive the digital certificate, the participants must complete all assessments, and receive scores of 70% or more on all three attempts.

A Date Discrepancy Candidates Should Know
There is a discrepancy between the dates listed on the material shared along with this post and those listed on the official CIET-NCERT page. The infographic in the shared material suggests that the Hindi program is scheduled from August 24 to August 28 and begins on the session “Teacher in the Context of NEP 2020” on August 24.
Conversely, the official CIET-NCERT activity page lists the English program “Digital Teacher: Evolving Competencies, Professional Identity and Practices” for August 17 to August 21, 2026, with Day 1 scheduled for August 17 and Day 5 scheduled for August 21. Therefore, the August 24 to August 28 dates should not be presented as confirmed by the current activity page for the official English program. The Hindi promotional infographic supports these dates, while the official page currently supports August 17 to August 21.
Final Thoughts
The Digital Teacher program shows a distinct shift in teacher education in India from the previous focus of merging technology with teaching. Digital competency will be a part of the competencies of the teaching profession. AI and digital tools will aid teaching, but educators must be able to use AI responsibly and select digital tools which serve their teaching purposes. In addition, digital tools must not compromise the importance of human interaction in the teaching and learning process.
Programs that focus on digital teaching will help teachers understand the implications that the changes in the profession will have rather than learning to use the various digital tools that are available.
