National Workshop on Anthrogogy & Indian Knowledge Systems at EFLU, Lucknow

The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Lucknow campus, hosted a two‑day national workshop on adult education and Indian Knowledge Systems, promoting learner‑centred pedagogy and ethical knowledge traditions.

LucknowThe English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) in Lucknow concluded a high‑profile national workshop titled “From Teaching to Co‑Creation: Anthrogogy and Indian Knowledge Traditions in the Education of Adults.” The day‑long event drew over 60 delegates from across India, including educators, researchers, policy thinkers, and adult learning practitioners.

The workshop critically examined the limitations of traditional pedagogical models, particularly in the context of adult learners whose experiences, motivations, and cognitive styles differ markedly from younger students. Central to the discussions was anthrogogy — a learner‑centred approach that treats adults as self‑directed, reflective, and ethically responsible participants in their educational journey. Experts contrasted anthrogogy with traditional pedagogy, stressing that the former promotes deeper engagement and internal motivation rather than rote learning.

Sessions also highlighted Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) as foundational philosophical frameworks that can enrich contemporary education with principles such as Jeevanam (biological life), Ujjivanam (conscious awareness), and Anandam (inner fulfilment). Speakers explained concepts like Trikaranashuddhi — the purity of thought, word, and deed — and how these ethical teachings can foster holistic learning that emphasises societal betterment (Prayojanam) and moral reasoning.

Responding to challenges posed by digital knowledge platforms (including AI tools), the workshop underscored that educators today must shift from being sole carriers of knowledge to facilitators of inquiry, critical thinking, and reflective dialogue. The event concluded with a valedictory session that featured participant reflections and the launch of Bharat Boudh IKS books by Vidya Bharati Uchha Siksha Sansthan — adding fresh scholarly resources to the Indian education research corpus.
