National Sports Day to Be Celebrated from August 28 to 31, 2026
To mark Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary on August 29, National Sports Day is celebrated every year. The SAI communication included in the UGC document states that the day is intended to honour India’s sporting legacy and promote sports as an integral part of an active lifestyle.
Tribute, Play and Move are the three pillars of the three-day National Campaign proposed by the Fit India Movement under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for 2026. Students, faculty members and campus communities from universities, colleges and Institutions of National Importance are encouraged to participate. The campaign promotes fitness and participation through activities that provide opportunities for active living. Activities can be adapted according to campus facilities, student requirements and local conditions.
Three Day National Sports Day Action Plan
The official campaign plan has divided the celebrations into three phases.
August 28: Tribute
Participants can take part in the 29 Challenge, performing a selected physical activity 29 times and sharing their participation on social media. Suggested activities include 29 kicks, 29 skipping repetitions, 29 push-ups or squats, sit-ups, jumping jacks, lunges, burpees or other sports-related activities.
Sports Bandhan will encourage participants to involve family members or institutional communities in fun sporting activities, set fitness goals and commit to maintaining them.
August 29: Play
The second day will focus on the on-ground celebration of “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein.” Schools and colleges have been encouraged to organise sports and fitness activities according to their facilities and local requirements. Suggested activities include sports competitions, indigenous games, challenges, walks, runs and races, e-sports, wellness activities and exhibitions. The campaign also encourages sports and film exhibitions and an exhibition football match at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
August 30: Move
The final day will feature a special Sundays on Cycle edition along with the BRICS Challenge Run and Ride. Cycling activities are intended to promote active mobility and fitness through participation by families, youth, women, athletes and local communities, while also reflecting India's BRICS Chairship in 2026.
Higher Education Institutions to Drive Participation
The campaign gives universities, colleges and educational institutions a central role in nationwide mobilisation. The SAI plan asks institutions to conduct activities and document participation through photographs and videos for consolidated reporting. A digital toolkit containing posters, banners, social media graphics and media frames has also been made available for campaign communication and reporting. Institutions and organisations can use these resources while submitting activity details, participation figures and supporting evidence.
The UGC has urged HEIs and INIs to support the initiative and help make National Sports Day 2026 a large scale campus movement focused on participation, fitness and sporting activities.
Final Thoughts
National Sports Day 2026 provides universities and colleges with an opportunity to make sports and fitness a stronger part of campus life. From August 28 to August 30, 2026, students, faculty members and campus communities can participate in sporting, fitness and community activities. Aligned with the Fit India campaign theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat,” the UGC’s call encourages higher education institutions to support a nationwide movement promoting active and healthy lifestyles. The three-day campaign will progress from Tribute on August 28, to Play on August 29 and Move on August 30.
