The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) is holding its annual science journalism workshop which will take place from February 12 to February 25 (two weeks) in 2023

Bengaluru : The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS)  is holding its annual science journalism workshop which will take place from February 12 to February 25 (two weeks) in 2023. Students will be working on all days except Sunday, from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. The webpage for the workshop explains that students will learn about basic skills necessary to help readers understand science through their news articles, alongside understanding the elements of good science writing and how to conduct effective interviews. Students will also learn about writing news and features as they can form the basis for their careers in science journalism.

The workshop instructor will be Anil Ananthaswamy, a former deputy news editor for the New Scientist magazine and a freelance editor for Front Matter, a news website belonging to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in America. He has a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) and a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering (MSEE) from the University of Washington based in Seattle, Washington, located in America.

Students must have active and committed participation when the workshop is in progress and will be required to write news and feature articles which will be edited in class and interview scientists. Students are also required to have knowledge of science and/or technology as well as understand various scientific terms or else they cannot enter the workshop.

The workshop has slots available for ten students. Necessary accommodations will be provided on campus to students who have come from other cities/states and students not part of NCBS are also encouraged to apply.

The deadline for joining the workshop is January 10, 2023 (Tuesday). Applicants must create a CV, write an essay of under 500 words explaining why they wish to join the workshop and mail it to Anil Ananthaswamy at ncbs.workshp.2022@gmail.com.
