Nagaland : In a recent meeting chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the Nagaland State Level Education Committee (SLEC) announced its plan to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in both government and private schools across the state, beginning in the 2025 academic year. The SLEC has also approved key structural changes, including upgrades and amalgamations of government schools and new regulations for private schools.
Key Decisions on NEP 2020 Implementation and School Restructuring
The SLEC approved the adoption of the NEP's 5+3+3+4 education structure, which will be implemented statewide from 2025. As part of the restructuring, six government middle schools in Kohima, Dimapur, and Mon districts will be upgraded to high schools, and a primary school in Ikishe village will be elevated to a middle school. The committee also sanctioned the merger of middle classes from 16 government middle schools (GMS) with government high schools (GHS), renaming the combined institutions as government primary schools (GPS). Additionally, 20 primary and middle schools will be merged into GMS and GHS, respectively.
In an effort to streamline resources, the SLEC authorized the closure of 17 GPS schools with zero enrollment across districts, including Peren, Wokha, Zunheboto, Chumoukedima, Phek, Mon, and Tuensang. Teachers from these schools will be redeployed to nearby institutions facing shortages. Furthermore, 54 GMS schools with minimal or no enrollment in classes 6 to 8 will be downgraded to GPS, with graduate teachers reassigned as necessary.
New Regulations for Private Schools and Administrative Overhauls
The SLEC mandated that all private schools must obtain prior approval from the Education Department and operate under registered societies. The committee also approved the creation of the Nagaland Education Service, establishing a committee to develop the necessary framework.
In addition, the SLEC announced plans to establish the State School Standards Authority (SSSA) and to draft the Nagaland State Quality Assessment and Accreditation Framework (SQAAF) to enhance school standards across the state. A committee will also examine the reclassification of vacancies in various categories under the Directorate of School Education and collaborate with the Personnel and Administrative Reforms and Finance Departments for further action.
