My Career Advisor App – Explore 1800+ Career Options, Get Personalised Guidance and Easier Planning for Life Beyond Class 12
New Delhi: Standing at a crossroads with too many signboards without any clear directions can be overwhelming while deciding what to do after Class 12. The Ministry of Education (MoE), NCERT-PSSCIVE and Wadhwani Foundation, in collaboration with the Government of India, have simplified career exploration with the My Career Advisor (MCA) app, a digital career guidance tool to help students identify their interests and work towards their career goals.
The MCA App helps students, their parents, teachers and counsellors with tools to support educated career-related decisions.
What is the My Career Advisor App?
My Career Advisor, developed by MoE, NCERT-PSSCIVE and the Wadhwani Foundation, is a digital app for career exploration and guidance in the field of employment portfolios. The My Career Advisor app leverages AI-based career tools to understand the respondent’s aptitude and interests, as well as their values, to recommend career paths.
The My Career Advisor app caters to all target audiences interested in pursuing higher education, vocational training or employment. Instead of forcing students to take up career paths simply because they are trending or popular, this app promotes knowledge of the self through interests and strengths.
Discover More Than 1,800 Career Paths
The My Career Advisor tool uses a broad career resource database as a selling point. One government education resource states that the My Career Advisor application provides access to over 1,800 job pathways in numerous sectors and routes. The current Wadhwani Foundation platform states the same, as does the current Google Play listing, which states over 1,500 job pathways.
Ultimately, the app wants students to know that it offers over 1,800 job pathways beyond the common engineering, medical, legal, management, and similar job pathways.
Career Advisor Tool from My Career Advisor
The tool begins with the student and not the job title. Tool users are presented with surveys to assess their:
- Aptitude
- Interests
- Values
- Passions
- Personal strengths
Based on these assessments, the tool provides potential job roles. Once these roles are visible, users can examine each role and make informed decisions about their next potential career path. The tool is great for students who are beginning to think about the career path they may want to pursue.
Bringing Together All Stages of Career Exploration
The My Career Advisor platform combines all of the different stages of career exploration for students.
1. Take the assessment
Students answer a series of questions to help the system understand their interests and identify possible career paths and their values.
2. Find jobs that match you
The system will use the answers to suggest l roles and career paths relevant to the user.
3. Learn about different fields
The system has multiple options for career pathways and different fields based on the views and interests of the student. Options are not limited to the most popular career choices.
4. Save and compare options
Users can save various role options and compare multiple career pathways. It is a convenient way for users to figure out the next steps they want to take. This is not about getting a quick answer. Rather, it is more about identifying multiple options to narrow down career pathways.
My Career Advisor Applies to More Than Just Students
Parents and teachers will likely be involved in student career pathway choices. While parents will look at the students’ strengths and options for education related to the career, teachers and counselors will need to use structured tools for their career discussions with students.
In addition to students, the platform is designed to be used by parents, teachers and counselors. For teachers, the platform can be used to conduct career pathway discussions for students in the classroom and for the teachers to help students explore different careers. For parents, the assessments can be used to have informed career pathway discussions with students and not be limited to traditional career pathway choices.
Why Career Guidance is Important After Class 12
There are several points of uncertainty in a student’s life, and one of them is post Class 12. Some students may have a strong academic record, but still have no clue about their preferred courses and stream, industry or profession. Others may have an inclination about their preferred profession, but have no idea about the professions related to it. For these students, carefully designed career exploration tools help fill this information gap.
Career Guidance after Class 12 and NEP 2020
The initiative complements the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which focuses on multidisciplinary studies, vocational education, and preparing students for the emerging Career Ecosystem and Skills.
My Career Advisor is an AI-based career guidance tool in line with the NEP 2020 and the emerging career and skills ecosystem of India. This makes the tool very relevant when students are beginning to see new professions that are related to Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Sustainability, Healthcare, Digital Services, etc.
Final Thoughts
My Career Advisor App helps students who have too many career options and not enough clarity, one of the most common student issues. The app provides personalised assessments to identify career roles, sector explorations and a catalogue with thousands of career options that assist students in answering the questions” What should I do?” and “What actually suits me?”
It's about the order they are asked in. Career planning doesn't always have to start with a profession. Sometimes, it has to start with you.
