Mumbai: Mumbai University has taken a pioneering step in the field of education by launching a unique two-year full-time Masters in Performing Folk Arts program, becoming the first university in India to offer such a course. This announcement comes in line with the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages innovative and comprehensive academic offerings.
Previously, the university offered a one-year PG Diploma in Folk Arts through its Lok Kala Academy, which primarily focused on professional training. However, this diploma course had limitations when it came to academic and research opportunities, as it did not make students eligible for PhD admissions. In response to the evolving educational landscape and the aspirations of students, the university decided to transform the diploma course into a two-year Masters program.
The Masters in Performing Folk Arts program will provide students with a well-rounded understanding of various performing folk arts of Maharashtra, including Gondhal, Tamasha, Powada, Bhajan, and Abhang. Students will also learn to play musical instruments commonly associated with these art forms, such as Dholki and Sambal. Additionally, as an elective option, students can explore non-Maharashtra performing folk arts, allowing for a broader cultural perspective.
Dr. Ganesh Chandanshive, a faculty member from Lok Kala Academy, expressed the significance of this transition, stating, "Until now, we offered a PG Diploma of one year, which focused on professional training. However, since it was not a Masters course, it had limited academic and research avenues. Now, students will spend an additional year but will go out with a Masters certificate, opening up new academic and career possibilities."
Lok Kala Academy, established at Mumbai University in 2004, has been at the forefront of studying and preserving performing folk arts. The academy's approach involved students learning these folk arts through both theoretical and practical methods. Workshops conducted by professionals in each folk art form were a highlight of the diploma program, providing students with hands-on experience.
The newly designed two-year Masters course will continue to emphasise practical and theoretical aspects, offering a total of 88 credits spread over two years. This comprehensive curriculum aims to create research opportunities and academic pathways for students interested in performing folk arts.
Dr. Ravindra Kulkarni, Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University, played a pivotal role in developing the unique syllabus for the Masters program. Dr. Chandanshive noted, "Our Masters course is entirely dedicated to performing folk arts, a significant departure from traditional performing arts programs. We hope that other universities will follow suit and contribute to the preservation and promotion of India's rich folk art traditions."
In addition to the Masters program, Lok Kala Academy plans to establish its own repertory centre and offer short-term courses for individuals of all age groups. These initiatives aim to generate revenue for the academy while fostering a deeper appreciation for performing folk arts.
The launch of the Masters in Performing Folk Arts program at Mumbai University marks a significant milestone in India's academic landscape. It not only ensures the preservation of cultural heritage but also paves the way for new research and career opportunities in the field of performing folk arts. Aspiring artists and scholars now have an innovative platform to explore and celebrate India's rich and diverse folk art traditions.
