IIT Roorkee Leads Integrated Farming Initiative to Boost Rural Livelihoods in Uttarakhand

IIT Roorkee, in collaboration with government and social organizations, is implementing an integrated farming initiative in Almora district, Uttarakhand, to promote sustainable livelihoods, women's empowerment and grassroots innovation under the RuTAG smart village center programme.

Almora - The IndiIan Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee is leading a collaboration integrated farming initiative at Khunt village in Almora district under the RuTAG Smart Village Centre (RSVC) programme. The project aims to improve rural livelihoods, promote women's empowerment and a strengthen sustainable agricultural practices in hill regions. 

The initiative has been done conceptualised by the office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA), Government of India and is being implemented on the ground by IIT, Roorkee in partnership with Setu, Aayog, Nehir Himalayan Sansthan, AARTI Foundation and local communities. A major achievement of the project includes a Plantations of over one lakh mulberry saplings to support agriculture-based livelihoods. Women from the village have played a leading role in the plantation and farming activities, making the programme a strong example of community-driven development.

Farmers are also practicing integrated farming by growing crops such as turmeric and ginger, along with mulberry, helping improve land stability, reduce soil erosion and creates a new income opportunities. The initiative has further encouraged value-added products like mulberry tea, supporting local enterprise development.

To strengthen traditional livelihoods an upgraded Bageshwari wool charkha has been installed at the RSVC. The improved charkha support both manual and electronic cooperation, solar power and adjustable speed, helping artisans produce better quality yarn and increase productivity. The program has also created a social impact beyond agriculture. Women's participation has increased significantly, helping them gain confidence, leadership roles and economic independence. Community facilities such as a free library and learning spaces have improved access to children active adults.

IIT Roorkee also organised the "Harit khulgad Nari shakti Utsav 2026" at Khunt village to celebrate the achievements of local women and the community. The event provided a platform to reflect on progress and discuss future pathways for sustainable rural development.  Speaking on the initiative, Director of IIT Roorkee, Professor K.K. Pant said that the integrated education and technology at the grassroots level empowers rural communities to build sustainable livelihoods , reduce migration and produce a self reliance in line with the spirit of Vocal and Local vision 2047.

The Initiative reflects a strong commitment to inclusive growth, climate-resilient farming and community led development, positioning  integrated farming as a model of sustainable rural transformation in Uttarakhand.
