Mission Saptah 2026: Indian Knowledge Systems in Higher Education

Interactive session highlights integration of traditional knowledge with modern education. Focus on interdisciplinary learning, innovation, and value-based education.

New Delhi.; The Ministry of Education India, through its Department of Higher Education, organised an interactive session on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) as part of Mission Sadhana Saptah 2026. The initiative, held between April 2 and 8, marked the foundation anniversary of the Capacity Building Commission and five years of Mission Karmayogi, focusing on strengthening citizen-centric governance through education and skill development.

The session aimed to promote structured discussions and peer learning on how India’s traditional knowledge systems can be integrated into modern education, research, and policymaking. Officials highlighted that India’s intellectual heritage offers valuable insights for innovation, problem-solving, and sustainable development, making it relevant in today’s academic and governance frameworks. A key highlight was the address by Mohan Raghavan, who emphasised that IKS should not be treated as a separate subject but as a multidisciplinary approach. He noted that integrating traditional knowledge into fields like science, engineering, and management can help move beyond rote learning towards a more holistic and application-based education system. The discussion also stressed that incorporating IKS into higher education can encourage original research, critical thinking, and culturally rooted learning, creating graduates who are not only professionally skilled but also socially responsible. This approach aligns with ongoing education reforms aimed at building a future-ready and globally competitive academic ecosystem.

Experts believe that such initiatives are crucial in redefining education by combining modern knowledge with traditional wisdom. By embedding Indian Knowledge Systems into mainstream learning, the government aims to create a more balanced, inclusive, and innovation-driven education system that supports India’s long-term development goals.
