Ministry of Education Highlights Reforms to Improve Teaching Quality and Institutional Performance
The Ministry of Education has showcased a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening teaching quality, faculty recruitment, research, and institutional performance across India's higher education sector. The reforms focus on improving academic standards, enhancing faculty capacity, promoting industry-academia collaboration, and expanding research and innovation in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Among the key initiatives is the Mission Mode Faculty Recruitment, which seeks to fill faculty vacancies in Central Higher Education Institutions (CHEIs), including backlog vacancies reserved for SC, ST, and OBC categories. Recruitment is being streamlined through the CU-Chayan Portal , the University Grants Commission's centralized online platform for transparent and accessible faculty recruitment in Central Universities.
To strengthen faculty development, the Ministry highlighted the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP), launched in 2023. The programme has established 151 Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centres (MMTTCs) across the country and has trained over 4 lakh faculty members . The initiative aims to improve teaching quality, institutional performance, and overall academic outcomes.
The Ministry also emphasized the Professor of Practice Initiative, introduced under UGC guidelines issued on 30 September 2022 . The initiative enables experienced industry professionals to contribute to higher education by mentoring students, supporting curriculum development, fostering innovation, and strengthening industry-academia collaboration.
Highlighting India's progress in research and innovation, the Ministry noted that the country's Global Innovation Index ranking improved from 66th in 2013 to 40th in 2023, while its Global Patent Applications ranking rose from 8th to 6th during the same period. India also ranks third globally in Science and Engineering PhD graduates, reflecting its growing research ecosystem.
The Ministry further outlined several AICTE-led reforms, including the implementation of Outcome-Based Curriculum the National Curriculum and Credit Framework (NCrF), mandatory internships, student induction programmes, promotion of Indian Knowledge Systems, emerging technologies, and outcome-based assessment reforms. Additional initiatives such as ATAL Faculty Development Programmes NITTT. AICTE IDEA Labs , research promotion schemes, and industry fellowship programmes are intended to strengthen institutional capacity and faculty excellence.
