Loreto Convent School Hosts Inter-School Nukkad Natak Competition, Inspiring Students to Raise Their Voices for Change
New Delhi: Powerful messages do not require elaborate processes. All it takes is a meaningful script and an audience willing to listen. Loreto Convent School, Delhi Cantt brought this thinking to life by hosting 'Meri Awaaz', an Inter-School Nukkad Natak Competition and a means of increasing social awareness using street theatre.
Schools across Delhi participated and were allowed to perform and highlight social issues about the day. Meri Awaaz provided an opportunity and a means of communicating and expressing civic awareness through the arts.
The competition was opened by a welcome from the School Manager, Sister Igora Pinto, and the Principal, Mrs. Alice Rose D’ Lima, who also welcomed the guests of the day, the participants, and the teaching faculty. Their addresses focused the day on teaching through a social cause and on the imaginations of the participants.
The accomplished panel comprised Mr. Sanjay Tuteja, Mr. Vinod Parashar, and Mrs. Sudha Sharma 'Pushp', and their evaluation of the competition was most welcome. The presence of Mr. Sudhakar Pathak of the Hindustani Bhasha Academy, Mrs. Sudesh Kadam, and Mrs. Seema Raijada made the event even more distinguished.
The event was wonderfully executed under the aegis of Head Mistress Mrs. Rupinder Oberoi, and all the commendable work of Mrs. Rekha Jacob, Mrs. Ani Parameswaran, Mrs. Anushilpa Anthony, Mrs. Rashmi Mehra and Hindi HoD Mrs. Saroj Bala Saini, in the meticulous preparation for the event.
All the competing teams used the traditional format of the Nukkad Natak to showcase the social issues of their concerns. They all constructed well-thought-out dialogues and performances to not only showcase their latent talents, but more importantly, issues of social concern. This confirmed the importance and advocacy role of street theatre in community awareness.
The team of Mount Carmel School, Dwarka, was awarded the First Prize for their outstanding performance, and the teams of Mount St. Mary’s School, Delhi Cantt, and Montfort School, Ashok Vihar, were awarded the Second and Third Prizes, respectively, for their equally commendable performances on social concerns.
The Judges, in their address, complimented the teams for their Nukkad Natak performances, which advocated important social issues, especially for the confidence and creativity they displayed, and which reiterated the effectiveness of Nukkad Natak in advocacy theatre.
The event ended with appreciation for all the participating students, teachers, and organizers who all worked together to create a wonderful experience for everyone at Meri Awaaz with a celebration of theatre, teamwork, and social responsibility. More than the awards, the competition carried an important and long-term message: that young voices cultivate the passion to create change much further than the stage.
Meri Awaaz provided an example of how schools can create and shape socially responsible citizens by providing an opportunity to combine creativity with socially responsible dialogue. The participating students demonstrated through their street theatre performances the ability of art to create social awareness, empathy, and positive change within society. The competition left the audience with the message that every consciously raised voice can create positive change within society.
