Tura, 10th July 2026: A major issue have come up regarding the education system in Meghalaya. The school teachers from Garo Hills are feeling very angry and stressed because of the new academic calendar. The Meghalaya Board of School Education, which everyone call MBoSE, have released a compressed schedule for this year. The Garo Hills Deficit School Teachers’ and Employees Association, or GHDSTEA, has openly warned the government about this. They said that this new timetable is pushing the whole education system towards a breaking point. Teachers has to rush everything and this is causing a big burnout crisis among both the educators and the small kids.
Shortened Timelines Causing Huge Burnout :
The main problem with this compressed calendar is that the academic year has become too small. The board expect the teachers to finish the full syllabus, take all exams, check the answer sheets, and then start the new classes in a very short time. Teachers are saying that doing all these things in such a small timeline is completely impossible. Because of this fast speed, the traditional mid-term break has been completely removed from the school calendar. This mid-term break was very important because teachers used to check papers and plan their next lessons calmly during this free time. Without this small gap, the quality of checking papers will become very bad and students will suffer directly.
Teachers Forced To Do Non-Teaching Duties :
The teachers has also complained that their pressure is increasing because the government give them extra non-teaching works. Right now, many school teachers are pulled out from their daily classes. They are being forced to work as Booth Level Officers, which people call BLOs, for the special checking of voter lists. The GHDSTEA union said that the government treat teachers like common office clerks for the election department. When teachers are busy doing election work instead of standing in classrooms, how can they give the high quality education that the state government always promise to the public? The students are losing precious learning hours every single day.
Bad Effects on Students and Local Life :
Another major worry is that MBoSE is not matching with national standards anymore. Other big school boards like CBSE, ICSE, or neighboring states follows a very different and relaxed schedule. Because Meghalaya is changing the timeline randomly, the local students will face big problems when they go outside the state for higher studies or admissions. Also, this new compressed schedule is ruining the social life of the community. The long summer vacations are now cut very short. In Meghalaya, young students always attend youth leadership camps or church programs during summer holidays, but now they does not have any time left for these cultural activities.
Clear Demands Made To The Government :
Looking at all these serious problems, the GHDSTEA association have given some strict demands to the state education department. They want the government to explain why they changed the school dates without asking anyone. The association said that the education department did not do any meetings with school managements or teachers before making this calendar. They are demanding an immediate review of the dates and want proper buffer periods for administrative works. The teachers clearly stated that these are not simple suggestions, but these are highly necessary corrections to save the teaching workforce from total exhaustion and to protect the future of the children.
