Shillong: The Government of Meghalaya has introduced Ascent 2026, a comprehensive initiative designed to strengthen the state's performance in national-level competitive examinations such as the UPSC Civil Services Examination, JEE, and NEET. The programme was officially launched at the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI) in Mawdiangdiang, Shillong, on August 12.

The initiative aims to create a robust ecosystem for competitive examination preparation by bringing together students, educators, civil servants, coaching institutions, parents, and policymakers to develop long-term strategies for academic excellence.

Financial Assistance for UPSC Aspirants

During the event, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma presented CM-INSPIRE incentive cheques of ₹50,000 each to seven candidates from Meghalaya who successfully cleared the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026.

Under the CM-INSPIRE scheme:

• Candidates clearing the UPSC Preliminary Examination receive ₹50,000.

• Candidates qualifying for the UPSC Main Examination are eligible for ₹1 lakh.

The financial support is intended to reduce the economic burden associated with civil services preparation while motivating more young people from Meghalaya to pursue careers in the All India Services.

Building a Competitive Examination Ecosystem

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sangma emphasized that success in national competitive examinations requires a strong support system rather than isolated individual efforts. He highlighted the government's vision of developing similar ecosystems across sectors including sports, science and technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and competitive examinations.

Encouraging aspirants to remain committed to public service, he urged them to focus on their purpose and long-term contribution to society.

Expressing his aspirations for the state, Sangma said he hopes to see a future where Cabinet Secretaries to the Government of India emerge from Meghalaya, reflecting the state's growing talent pool.

MATI Inaugurates Digital Learning Lab

The Chief Minister also inaugurated MATI's Digital Learning Lab, developed under the ACTI Scheme with support from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

The new facility will create digital training resources for the national iGOT (Integrated Government Online Training) platform, enhancing digital learning opportunities for government officials and aspiring civil servants.

MATI Highlights Training Achievements

MATI Director General Cyril V. Diengdoh said Ascent 2026 represents a structured effort to prepare Meghalaya's youth for highly competitive national examinations.

He noted that over the past year, MATI has:

• Conducted more than 240 training programmes.

• Trained nearly 5,000 government officials.

• Expanded specialized training for senior officers, Grade-IV employees, and drivers.

Diengdoh emphasized that Meghalaya possesses abundant talent and that improved guidance, ambition, and preparation can significantly enhance the state's representation in national examinations.

Early Career Guidance for Students

MATI Director Swapnil Tembe stressed the importance of beginning competitive examination preparation at the school level.

According to him, Meghalaya produces 20,000 to 30,000 graduates annually, but many students remain focused primarily on state-level opportunities. He advocated for:

• Early career counselling in schools.

• Greater emphasis on conceptual learning over rote memorization.

• Stronger STEM education.

• Development of coaching and study ecosystems in Shillong, Tura, and Jowai.

Tembe also highlighted that seven candidates qualifying for the UPSC Preliminary Examination this year marks the highest number from Meghalaya, with five of them receiving CM-INSPIRE support.

Aspirants Welcome Government Support

UPSC Preliminary qualifier Menangtei Kuparlang Thangkhiew said the CM-INSPIRE financial assistance would help aspirants manage the high costs associated with long-term UPSC preparation.

He also underlined the importance of having more civil servants from Meghalaya who understand the state's unique socio-economic challenges and can contribute effectively to grassroots governance.

Expert Sessions Focus on Smart Preparation

The Ascent 2026 programme featured expert-led sessions covering several aspects of competitive examination preparation, including:

• UPSC, JEE and NEET preparation strategies

• Long-term academic planning

• Analytical thinking and problem-solving

• Time management and revision techniques

• Alternative career opportunities

• Competency-based education

• Responsible use of Generative AI for learning

• Stress management and mental well-being

The event also encouraged collaboration between schools, parents, coaching institutes, and government agencies to establish a stronger support network for future aspirants across Meghalaya.
