Under the new framework, students and researchers graduating from the institution will receive university-level qualifications recognized under state law.

Shillong : Meghalaya Cabinet has approved a bill to elevate the Indian Institute of Public Health, Shillong (IIPH) to the status of a state university. The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday evening. The legislation, officially titled the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong Bill, 2026, will empower the institute to independently award academic degrees  a significant shift from its previous status. Under the new framework, students and researchers graduating from the institution will receive university-level qualifications recognised under state law.

Boosting Academic Autonomy and Research Capacity

Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla highlighted the broader regional importance of the move, noting that the institution’s new status will help build a skilled workforce capable of responding to health challenges not only in Meghalaya but across the entire Northeast. He underscored the need for advanced training in areas such as epidemiology, disease prevention and public health policy.Officials say the upgrade will grant IIPH greater academic freedom, allowing it to design independent curricula, manage examinations, and chart its own research priorities. By becoming a state university, the institute is expected to emerge as a hub of public health scholarship and innovation in the region.

Alongside the university upgrade, the Meghalaya government also approved several complementary measures, including infrastructure expansion clearances for local tourism projects and a policy to enhance career progression for anganwadi workers aimed at strengthening the state’s integrated child development services.
