MCD Launches Major Initiatives to Boost Enrolment and Support Inclusive Education in Delhi

Free meals, uniforms, and expanded therapy services form part of the MCD’s renewed push to increase student enrolment and enhance support for children with disabilities.

New Delhi. : The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to strengthen its education system by increasing student enrolment and expanding support services for children with disabilities in government schools.

Currently catering to around 6.5 lakh students, MCD aims to add at least one lakh more students in the coming months, according to Education Committee Chairperson Yogesh Verma. To achieve this, two teachers from each MCD school will conduct outreach drives every Saturday across nearby localities, encouraging parents to enrol their children.

Teachers will highlight the key benefits of MCD schools—free mid-day meals, uniforms, and stationery—while also addressing parents’ concerns about quality and access. To motivate staff, the corporation plans to introduce a ‘Nigam Award’ for teachers who successfully contribute to enrolment growth.

In a parallel effort, the Delhi government is expanding therapeutic and counselling services for children with disabilities through its network of 24 resource centres. Recently, Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated 10 new centres under the ‘Sewa Pakhwada’ initiative, aimed at offering holistic care to over 12,500 students.

These centres will provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychological counselling by trained professionals. Facilities will include sensory and virtual reality rooms, family counselling, and formal assessments to ensure comprehensive developmental support.

To maintain effective coordination, schools have been directed to follow structured guidelines for collaboration between Special Education Teachers (SETs), Resource Centre Coordinators, and therapists. Each centre will operate six days a week from 9 am to 5 pm, including during vacations, with up to eight 45-minute therapy sessions conducted daily.

This dual strategy—community outreach to boost enrolment and enhanced therapy services for special needs children—underscores the MCD’s commitment to providing inclusive and quality education for every child in Delhi.
