A big campaign have started in Manipur to save the education system. The opening function happened at Tamphasana Girls' Higher Secondary School which is in Imphal. This program is going to run for a full month. The main name given to this movement is "Save Education, Save Manipur, Save the Future". The people who is organizing this program want to make schools and colleges a place where no disturbances happens. Many leaders from different groups came to support this idea.
The program was started by a special group called the Co-ordinating Committee on Disturbance Free Educational Zone Demand. This group have 16 different smaller associations inside it. All these associations came together because they think the school system in the state are going through very bad times. The students and teachers both wants some real change now. They feel if they does not talk now, things will become more worse.
Huge Problems In Education :
During the program, the president of DESAM, whose name is Oinam Romesh, gave a long speech. He said that the education sector in Manipur are suffering from a very serious disease. There is so many basic problems that the government is not fixing on time. He told that there are big shortages of classrooms in many places. Students does not get their text books on proper time, and the books gets delayed for months.
Because the government do not bring proper teacher policies, the whole system is looking very broken. The speakers said that student bodies and civil organizations has to make their demands strong because nobody is listening to them quietly. If the authorities does their duty properly from starting, then teachers and other unions will not have any need to do these type of protests. The crowd in the school was listening very carefully to these points.
Rules Of NEP Violations :
Another big point that came out was about the new National Education Policy, which people call NEP 2020. The leaders said that the state is lagging very much behind in putting this policy into real work. The system have failed to implement it properly on the ground level. For example, they showed that some big schools have a very huge number of students but there is not enough teachers to teach them.
In some schools, one single teacher have to handle 100 students at the same time. This thing completely goes against the standard rules of India's NEP policy. The student-teacher ratio is totally wrong, and because of this, the quality of study is getting ruined completely. The committee ask who will take the responsibility to save the value of education if things goes on like this.
What The Committee Demands :
After the speaking program was over, the people who attended the event started a big slogan campaign just outside the gate of the school. They stood there and shouted slogans for bringing major reforms in the whole education department. They want that schools should get enough money and proper learning materials. The main demand is to clean the department from things like corruption, nepotism, and giving unfair favors to people.
They also said that political interference must stop completely in the schools. Another major point they raised is that the Directorate of School Education and the Directorate of University and Higher Education must be separated into two different parts. They want good qualified teachers who comes only through merit, not through backdoors or personal connections.
Support From All Groups :
This whole program saw many important senior members sitting together as presidium members. The chairman of the committee, Moirangthem Lokendro, who is also the president of AMCTA, was present there. Along with him, the president of AMRPSWA, Laishram Joykhuman, and the convenor of COTA, Laishram Jugindro, also joined the stage to show full support.
The 16 bodies inside the committee includes big names like AMCTA, AMRPSWA, COTA, and DESAM, which represents almost all teachers and school staffs in the state. All these people have agreed that they will continue this awareness campaign for the next four weeks across different areas so that every person understand the importance of making schools a disturbance-free zone.
