A official report presented in the Lok Sabha on August 3, 2026, have brought out a very shocking truth about Lakshadweep. While government is pushing hard for digital education across India, this Union Territory shows a complete zero in all urban school digital setups. People usually expect that island cities or main town areas will have at least some basic tech, but official government data shows urban schools in Lakshadweep has no digital facilities at all.
According to the report data, Lakshadweep has a total of 34 operational schools across its islands. But when you look at the urban column, the number is plain zero everywhere. This surprising gap between urban and rural setup have shocked many officials and parents.
Zero Smart Classrooms and Zero Computer Labs in Urban Areas -
The numbers given in the Lok Sabha document clearly show that Lakshadweep urban schools have zero smart classrooms. Not even a single school in urban area have received smart board or interactive learning screens. On the other hand, rural schools in the island UT have 33 smart classrooms set up for students.
The exact same thing happens in computer facility too. Urban Lakshadweep records zero schools with computer facilities. Meanwhile, all 34 rural schools have proper computer facility installed. This means city students in Lakshadweep is completely dependent on old traditional book methods, while village side students is getting modern tools.
Internet Connectivity Also Shows Complete Zero in Cities -
In today times, internet is the main thing for modern education. But the Lok Sabha statistics show that urban schools in Lakshadweep has zero internet connectivity available. Not even one city school is connected with active internet for teaching purpose.
Surprisingly, all 34 rural schools in Lakshadweep is fully equipped with internet connectivity. It means 100 percent of rural schools in the islands have internet access, but urban schools is left with nothing. This total contrast between city side and village side have made Lakshadweep a very unique case in the whole country data.
Comparison with Delhi and Other Capital Regions -
To understand how rare this situation is, one can look at capital regions like Delhi or Chandigarh. Delhi has 1,940 urban smart classrooms and zero rural ones, because it is mainly city area. Chandigarh also have 116 smart classrooms in urban side and zero in rural side. Most states in India shows city schools getting good portion of facilities first.
But Lakshadweep have turned this completely upside down. By keeping urban tech at absolute zero and giving 100 percent computer and internet access to rural schools, the island territory stands out as the only region with such extreme difference.
Why Urban Infrastructure is Completely Missing in Lakshadweep -
The main reason behind this shocking number lies in how Lakshadweep is classified geographically. Most of the population and educational institutes on small islands is counted under rural Panchayats or rural blocks. The official urban administration areas are extremely limited or almost non-existent for school mapping.
Because of this geographic tagging, all government funds and digital drives went directly into rural school budgets. As a result, rural students is getting 100 percent digital coverage in computers and internet, while urban record stays at complete zero. This strange setup have created a very surprising picture in the national report.
