Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Education Department has announced a set of reforms to make schools more inclusive, safe, and health-oriented. From relaxing uniform rules on festival days to launching a child-safety programme and introducing Zumba sessions, the state is reshaping the school environment to balance academics with cultural pride and student well-being.
Festive Dress Code for Students
Students will now be allowed to wear traditional and festive attire during major celebrations like Onam, Christmas, and Ramadan. Officials say this move is designed to foster cultural inclusivity, joy, and pride within campuses, moving away from a rigid uniform-only policy on festival days.
‘Surakshamitram’ for Child Safety
The state has rolled out Surakshamitram, a child-safety initiative announced by Education Minister V. Sivankutty. Drop-boxes will be placed in schools to allow students to raise complaints anonymously, ensuring quicker redressal of issues. The minister emphasised that strict action will be taken against any form of abuse or injustice faced by children.
Zumba for Fitness and Stress Relief
To promote physical health and mental well-being, weekly Zumba sessions have been added to school activities since July. The programme is linked to Kerala’s anti-drug campaign, offering students a fun, energetic, and positive outlet.
Though the move has sparked discussions over co-ed participation, fitness experts have welcomed it. International instructor Roma Mansoor praised the initiative, saying dance-based workouts boost confidence, relieve stress, and help children tackle lifestyle challenges.
A Holistic Approach to Education
By blending cultural respect, student safety, and fitness, Kerala is setting an example of holistic schooling, where learning goes hand-in-hand with well-being and inclusivity.
