Bengaluru : Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University in Karnataka has made history by appointing K N Renuka Pujar, 27, as its first transgender guest lecturer. This groundbreaking achievement highlights the university's commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities in academia.
Renuka Pujar, a resident of Kurugodu in Ballari district, joined the Kannada Department at the university's Nandihalli campus earlier this month. Reflecting on her journey, Pujar expressed gratitude for the support she received from her family and the university faculty. "I’m very happy. After a lot of struggle, I have reached this stage. The university has helped me a lot," she shared.
Journey of Determination
Renuka began her gender transition in 2017 during her undergraduate studies and completed her post-graduation in Kannada in 2022. Despite limited resources, her parents, who come from an agricultural background, supported her education, enabling her to achieve her goals. Pujar is passionate about teaching and hopes to inspire other transgender individuals to pursue education. She also plans to pursue a PhD to further her academic career and become a professor.
Selection Process
Renuka stood out among 30 candidates during the selection process due to her strong qualifications, excellent academic record, and impressive performance in a lecture demonstration. Her appointment received unanimous approval from the university's selection committee.
