Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has decided to remove marks for the third language in SSLC (Class 10) exams and replace them with a grading system.
The decision will be implemented from the ongoing SSLC exams. Students will still have to write the third language paper, but the marks will not be included in their final score.
Instead of marks, students will be given grades such as A, B, C, or D. There will also be no pass or fail system for this subject.
With this change, the total marks for the SSLC exam will be reduced from 625 to 525, as the 100 marks for the third language will no longer be counted.
The rule will apply to all third languages offered in schools, including Hindi, Sanskrit, Tulu, Marathi, and Arabic.
Officials said students must still appear for the exam, but the change is expected to reduce pressure, as the subject will not affect their overall result.
The decision was announced by School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa after the Assembly session.
Some concerns have been raised about the timing of the decision, as it was announced just days before the third language exam.
