Karnataka: Education department obliges 6 years as minimum age for class 1.

Bengaluru: The state government on Tuesday extended the minimum age for children for admission to class 1 by seven months based on National EducationPolicy (NEP) and RTE rules. Based on the notification issued by the education department, the current age limit of 5 years 5months will now by 6years.

The commissioner of public instruction said the new rule is applicable to prospective students. “The rule is in sync with RTE rules as well as the new National Education Policy. Already 21 states have implemented it. We had written to government seeking change in our rules as well to abide by RTE and NEP,” said Vishal R, commissioner, public instruction.

The association said that the age order should’ve been issues in March itself. In 2017 an order was issued stating students aged 5 years,10 months could be admitted to class 1. On May 23, 2018, it was said that the age for class 1 admissions were 5 years, 5months. On March 20, 2020, it was said that any child enrolled in LKG should be 3 years, 5months and to class 1, 5 years, 5 months.

The order should’ve been issued earlier in March said Shashi Kumar, Association of Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools of Karnataka. However, the commissioner said that this was applicable only to the prospective students.
