Karnataka: Around seven new model universities will be functional from the academic year 2023-24. Each of the universities will be funded with Rs.2 crore and will be district centred.

It is expected that the new universities will be functional in Chamarajanagar, Haveri, Bidar, Kodagu, Hassan, Koppal, and Bagalkot which are believed as the educationally backward districts. This was announced in Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s 2022-23 Budget.

On Monday, Higher Education Minister CN Ashwath Narayan held a meeting with the Law Minister JC Madhuswamy on the seven new universities to be established. Based on the reports it was found that there were no hurdles to pursue the start of universities and the matter is going to be placed before the Cabinet that is scheduled to meet this Thursday.

“These universities will be different from the conventional ones and will be set up as per the recommendations of National Education Policy 2020. The plan is to start the universities wherever there are functional postgraduate centres. Where there are no PG centres, we need to investigate a new infrastructure” A senior official said.

“Once it is cleared in the Cabinet, we will start the process and these universities will also have powers to give affiliation within the jurisdiction of that district. These universities will not be lavish,” the official added.

“Maximum utilisation of IT without the additional requirement of manpower will make these universities different from conventional ones,” Bommai had said in his 2022-23 Budget speech.

Out of 31 districts, six will be left without a public university now: Ramanagara, Chikkamagaluru, Udupi, Chitradurga, Yadgiri, Uttara Kannada. Some districts have more than one university. Bagalkot, for instance, which has a horticulture university.
