JoSAA Counselling 2026 Registration Starts for Engineering Aspirants
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has begun its counselling for 2026-27, announcing admission registration for choice filling for those seeking placement at India's top engineering colleges. Eligible users can log on to the JoSAA portal to participate in the pooled admission process. This will be essential counselling for those who have qualified JEE Main 2026 and JEE Advanced 2026 and are seeking placement in IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIEST Shibpur and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) and the like.
JoSAA 2026 provides a single-window counselling facility for admission to 138 institutions which includes 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, IIEST Shibpur and other GFTIs. From June 2, 2026, candidates can register and select their choices (i.e., fill their choices) by submitting their preferred institute and branch based on their rank and their career goals.
For lakhs of engineering candidates, the JoSAA counselling is the most significant step after the results of the entrance exam. After the counselling process, a seat is allotted based on the rank, category, seat availability and the choice order.
Dates of the counselling and choice filling process
For choice filling, candidates have to register on the official JoSAA website within the specified time frame. During this time, candidates may select and order institutes and academic programmes per their preferences. JoSAA will conduct mock seat allotments to help candidates understand their likely seat allotment and modify their choices.
Key Highlights of JoSAA Counselling 2026
- Registrations with options filling continues till June 2, 2026
- This round of admission is for IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIESTs and GFTIs
- Options can be filled and reordered any number of times.
- Mock seat allocation will give students a preview of seat allocation.
- Options will most likely be locked after mock allocation.
- Round 1 seat allocation will happen on June 13, 2026
- Multiple rounds of seat allocation will be done as a part of the counselling process.
Students aiming for IITs must qualify JEE Advanced 2026. Admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs will be based on JEE Main 2026 rank. Students should have a look at the previous years opening and closing ranks before making their final choice.
What Students Should Do Before Locking Choices
Experts say students should not be in a rush to fill in their options. This will give students enough time to create a logical order of preferences which will impact outcomes of the allocations. Students should conduct research on branch options, placement records, academics, location and the participating institutes’ reputation before locking their options.
Students should get the following documents for the admission ready:
- JEE Main 2026 scorecard
- JEE Advanced 2026 rank card (if applicable)
- Class 10 and Class 12 passing certificates
- Category Certificate (if applicable)
- PwD Certificate (if applicable)
- Passport size photographs
- Government issued photo ID
- Any other documents as mentioned by JoSAA and the participating institutes.
Candidates applying to India's leading engineering institutions should check the official JoSAA portal for updates on mock allotments, seat allocation rounds, document verification, and reporting schedules. As admission to these institutions is highly competitive, a strategic counselling plan is beneficial for those hoping to secure a preferred branch and institute.
