New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA), in an emergency General Body Meeting (GBM), has strongly condemned the termination of Dr. Rohan V.H. Choudhari, calling the move “vindictive,” “grossly illegal,” and in violation of JNU’s Act, Statutes, and Ordinances.
According to JNUTA, the termination was not a collective decision of the Executive Council (EC) but one personally driven by the Vice Chancellor (VC) as part of a “vendetta.” The GBM alleged that faculty members who remained silent during the EC meeting became “partners in a crime,” as termination requires a two-thirds majority under JNU rules — a threshold that would not have been met had even two members dissented.
Allegations Against the VC
JNUTA stated that Dr. Rohan’s dismissal was intended to “send a signal” to teachers about the consequences of defying the VC’s diktats. The resolution accused the VC of turning the university into a “one-person show,” with appointments of Deans and other positions made at her discretion. The termination, it said, marked a “new low” and crossed a threshold that makes her continuation “intolerable.”
JNUTA’s Resolutions
The GBM resolved to take the following steps:
- Protest: Teachers will assemble at the Administrative Block on 1 September 2025 at 12:45 pm to express their outrage.
- Appeal to Visitor: JNUTA will write to the President of India, seeking the removal of the VC.
- Open Letters: Letters will be issued to the VC, Deans, and EC members, holding them accountable for their roles in the decision.
- Joint Action: A joint protest with JNUSU (which has also opposed the termination) may be organized.
- Counter Misinformation: JNUTA will clarify facts publicly to counter what it calls a misinformation campaign by the VC.
- Further Steps: The JNUTA Executive has been authorized to pursue additional measures.
The teachers’ body maintained that the case represents not just an injustice to an individual but also a serious threat to the university’s democratic and academic functioning.
