JNU to set up new school for Indian languages and Centre for partition studies

by Avantika Sharma

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is geared up to introduce a school of Indian studies and a school of Indian languages. This was revealed by Santhishree Dhulipudi Pandit, vice-chancellor of the university.

Speaking about the school for Indian languages, Pandit added that it is funded by corpus grants from every state government. So, the central government doesn’t give any money for the school. Every state government institutes its own chair professor and makes the selection. That professor works at JNU. Their salary and everything are looked after from the corpus grant.

Till now, states have come forward with grants for Tamil, Kannada, Odiya and Urdu. Additionally, the university will be creating a centre for translation interpretation alongside Indian language labs, added the VC.

Dhanya Pandit, a historian at the University of Mumbai, said she was hopeful that the university would establish a center for the study of the partition of India.Pandit is ‘hopeful’ to establish a ‘Sardar Vallabhai Patel Centre for Partition Studies’ at the university. She said that the university wants to work with neighbours as well as other parts of the world, of how they have looked at partitions. Instead of just having exhibitions and talks, real research would be useful as a database. This is just a suggestion as we do not know whether we will get permission from the government and UGC, adds the vice-chancellor.
