JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar conferred Honorary Colonel rank in NCC

The Ministry of Defence, Government of India, issued a notification in this regard in the Gazette of India

 

New Delhi. : Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has been conferred the rank of Honorary Colonel in the National Cadet Corps (NCC). The Ministry of Defence, Government of India, issued a notification in this regard in the Gazette of India dated January 7, 2023. Prof. Najma Akhtar has been appointed “Colonel Commandant” of the University as the Vice Chancellor of JMI effective from 12th April, 2019. The official ceremony for conferring the rank and the certificate will be held soon.

Prof. Najma Akhtar, has been an honourable member of the national High Level Expert Committee for a comprehensive review of NCC, constituted by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India in 2021 in order to make NCC more relevant in changed times. The Committee has submitted its recommendations in November 2022.

The Vice Chancellor has also taken the initiative and directed the University to introduce NCC as a Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) course at the undergraduate level in the session 2022-23. JMI is among the first Universities to introduce NCC as a credit course at the undergraduate level in each of the six semesters. Trained NCC officers are teaching the CBCS course which has theory and practical components. This course will enhance the job prospects of the students who have opted for it.    

The NCC credit course titled “Nation Building and NCC” has further popularized NCC among the students of JMI. Undergraduate students of Semester I, from across different faculties, have joined NCC specially to study this course and will be taking the Examination for Semester I this month.

All students who enrolled as NCC cadets and are also pursuing the NCC credit course will immensely benefit by obtaining academic credit for NCC training in addition to acquiring the valuable NCC ‘B’ and ‘C’ certificates for which they will have to appear for the said NCC certificate examination.
