New Delhi: The Office of the Chief Proctor, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) today organised a special lecture on the topic “Combating Corruption : Legal Framework in India” as part of Vigilance Awareness Week (VAW-2022) being observed by the university from 31st October- 06th November, 2022. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Eqbal Hussain, Dean, Faculty of Law at the Proctor Office lawn. Prof. Nazim Husain Jafri, Registrar, JMI was the Chief Guest of the programme. Prof. Ibraheem, Dean Students Welfare (DSW) was the Guest of Honour of the program which was presided over by Prof. Ejaz Masih, Chief Vigilance Officer, JMI. Prof. Atiqur Rahman, Chief Proctor, JMI welcomed the chief guest, speaker and other dignitaries and highlighted the need and objectives of the lecture.
The Subject Association, Department of Economics, JMI organized a webinar on the topic ‘Corruption free India for a developed nation’. The talk was delivered by Dr. PC Jaffer IAS, Secretary Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, Government of Karnataka on 3rd November, 2022. Prof. Asheref Illiyan, Head, Department of Economics, welcomed the online gathering and the speaker. He briefly shed light on various facets of corruption in India and reiterated the need for zero tolerance towards corruption so that country can achieve faster economic development. In his talk Dr Jaffer narrated the prevalence of corruption in various developed and developing nations and other related issues with honesty and integrity index. He was concerned about the education level, and opined that it should not be a parameter for the reduction in corruption. Later he briefed the audience about the concept of corruption and also explained about various kinds of dealings which will fall under the larger purview of corruption.
The Department of Tourism & Hospitality Management (DTHM), JMI observed (VAW-2022). An Integrity Pledge was administered by Dr. Sarah Hussain, Head of the Department to faculty members, non-teaching employees and students at the department to emphasize the importance of integrity in public and personal life and to show its true commitment to implement the policy of ‘Zero Tolerance against Corruption’. Further, the DTHM organised various activities such as Street Play - Nukkad Natak and Poster Making Competition which culminated on two consecutive days i.e. November 3-4, 2022 in order to sensitize and make all the stakeholders aware of the consequences of corrupt practices on contemporary social issues. The street play was enacted at the campus outside Mohibul Hasan Block, JMI depicted scenes of corruption and means of tackling them like bribery, sexual harassment against women, domestic violence and taking favours at workplace etc. The play highlighted that corruption is way beyond and could take place anywhere, in any form and encouraged the audience to discourse the silence on corruption in the country.
In another event, the subject association of the Centre of Early Childhood Development & Research also organised a lecture on the theme “Corruption free India for a developed nation” delivered by Prof. Kahkashan Y. Danyal, Faculty of Law, JMI on 1st October, 2022. An integrity pledge was also administered to the staff and students of the centre. The program was organised under the supervision of Prof. Archana Dassi, Professor In-Charge of the centre. In the lecture, the speaker discussed about the importance of accountability/ transparency, criticism causes and effects of corruption, daily life relatable examples, global and Indian perspective and favoritism & nepotism.
