New Delhi, August 25, 2026 : A prestigious grant has been sanctioned to Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) under the “Support to Institutions and Scientific Professionals/Bodies/Associations” component of the Human Resource Development (HRD) Scheme of the Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
Under this scheme, DHR provides support to selected domestic institutions for conducting specialized training programmes for candidates in identified priority areas. JMI has been awarded a substantial grant of Rs. 67.23 lakh for a period of five years for its proposal titled “Molecular and Multi-Omics Approaches in Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): Diagnostics to Therapeutics.”
The grant marks a significant achievement for the University and will contribute substantially to strengthening biomedical research, scientific training, and capacity building in the critical area of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). The programme will provide specialized training in molecular and multi-omics approaches, encompassing areas from AMR diagnostics, multi-omics approaches, and development of therapeutic strategies. The initiative will also contribute to the objectives of the Skill India Programme of the Government of India by fostering skilled human resources in an important and rapidly evolving area of biomedical science.
The Principal Investigator of the Project, Dr. Shama Parveen, is Professor at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences (CIRBSc), Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Prof. Parveen’s research profile encompasses molecular biology, virology, infectious diseases and translational biomedical research. Prof. Parveen has completed research projects from several funding agencies, including DBT, CSIR, DST, UGC, and CCRUM-AYUSH. Prof. Parveen has also made significant contributions to research training, mentorship as well as organization of academic events, conferences, and hands-on workshops. The Co-Investigators of the approved proposal are Prof. Imtaiyaz Hasan, Prof. Asimul Islam, Prof. S. N. Kazim, and Prof. Rajan Patel, from CIRBSc, JMI. Their collective expertise will further strengthen the interdisciplinary character of the programme and facilitate advanced training in AMR research spanning molecular biology, computational approaches, drug discovery, etc.
The initiative is expected to enhance JMI’s contribution to AMR research and promote interdisciplinary scientific training, thereby supporting the development of skilled researchers and professionals capable of addressing the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
